Easily adapt this to hold a phone for use as home security
I want to share my tips to set up a very affordable home security system. I have used this system to keep an eye on my kiln for the last 3 years when I am firing at the studio, and recently set up cameras in my home. It is nice to see what the pets are doing during the day, and since I live alone now I feel more comfortable having cameras in key areas.I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has had to replace my smart phone every couple of years. Between me and my partner, there were several smart phones with really good cameras sitting in a drawer, with either broken screens or the processor was just too slow to operate as we wanted it to. I have used them as bedside alarms, music players, they're super useful, but this is the most cost saving use I have found for them.If you don't have an old smart phone languishing in a drawer, refurbished smart phones can be purchased online as cheaply as $15-$30, or ask around šEven though the phones are no longer connected to a phone network, they are all wifi capable. I made sure that the WIFI was turned on and the passwords were correct. I also removed all personal data and installed any updates that were available before I went on to the next step.I installed an app on all of the phones, there are several available, mine costs ~$30 a year to be ad free with more storage for recording and more cameras. The free version is still super functional. If you don't care about ads, and only want to set up one camera you could do it for $0 aside from the long past cost for the phones, a cable and plug, and perhaps a way to mount it.I also installed the app on my current phone so I can get notifications and view my security cameras from anywhere. I can also view my cameras on my computer by logging in to the web version of the app.The app allows motion detection/recording, or I can record continuously. The recordings are stored on the web, so the memory size of the phone is inconsequential. It can record & broadcast audio - either a siren or I can talk to someone who is in range of the camera. This seems like a great potential doorbell cam setup. When searching for an app be sure to shop the features and price since there is a lot of variation between the different offerings. You need wifi, a cord long enough to plug the phone in, and a way to hold it in place where you want to monitor activity.I did a quick online search and there are light socket USB adaptors if you want to plug your phone/camera charger into a nearby ceiling fixture.I modified this car dashboard mount by drilling 2 holes in the base to screw it in place. I am astonished at the quality for $6. I ordered 2 more to mount the rest of my cameras.I used a drill press and a step drill bit and (I think) #6 screws. It may be a little harder but not impossible to use a standard bit in a hand drill. The plastic doesn't seem brittle but be careful. The only buggerance was the suction cup on the base meant to to attach to the dash. I couldn't easily remove it, and after drilling through, the hole closed up so that I had to really lean on driving the screw to get through. I trust you'll figure it out and if you come up with a better way let me know, I have 2 more to do!

Ehh, go somewhere else
Save your money and time. I ordered this so I can vlog in the car. The quality is there but because the clamps are like a hugging method (wrap around), I would have to take my phone case off every time I would vlog, just for it to fit; not to mention, once I added a pop socket, it rendered useless (go figure). My next complaint is that it only has several levels for (the tightness) for squeezing your phone - almost like a belt, therefore, if you can't squeeze it any tighter, but it's still loose, it's not going to have a tight grip on your phone, which leads me to my biggest complaint. With or without my phone case, I found my phone flying out of the mount whenever I would take a turn. I ended up getting a $7 car/phone mount from TJ Maxx and it works way better than this. Not to mention, if you have a larger/heavier phone like mine (iphone 13 pro max), it's not going to stay at the angle you want and may just flop downwards.I really wanted to like this but it's not functional for my use. Buyer beware*** just go to TJ Maxx - you'll have better luck there and won't have to wait for shipping.

Does not stick for very long...
Unboxing this unit, it seemed well put together. Has suction cup option as well as vent mount. All seemed OK. Mounted it to windshield and left the car. 30 minutes later, I returned and found it laying on the floor. I cleaned another spot on the windshield and moved to a shady area and tried again...same result. Disappointed at best. I do not recommend this phone holder.
