The Asch Recordings Vol. 1-4

The Asch recordings of Woody Guthrie were memorable and enjoyable listening of a time when many people had the courage to speak out intelligently against injustices in the United States. The songs capture a time of extreme inequality and exploitation in the U.S., a time when organizing moved the powerful to improve the lives of average workers. The recordings are sprinkled throughout with lighter fare, bringing the balanced view of the time as understood by Guthrie. Every generation could learn this history through the "Everyman" voice of Woody Guthrie.

Well compiled and extensive.

My father loved Woody back in the early days and turned me on to him so I knew a lot of the songs. Great to have such a large collection at my fingertips.A great deal for so much Woody.And then one day my father came home with this newly released bright yellow album with a skinny kid with a bare chest and a strange hat on....He almost had to force me to give it a listen. Thanks Dad!What a talented family!!!!!!!!

I bought the digital version of this collection, and loved it so much that I asked my husband o make a gift of the CD set to me! As much a chronicle of history as it is a musical masterpiece, this is quintessential and essential Woody Guthrie. I can go weeks and weeks listening to nothing else!

Heard rest of the story about Woody. Already had many of his albums, but Asch recordings filled in what was missing.

The Asch Recordings were some of Woody's best-known songs since so little else has been preserved from his wanderlust career. Like many archival recordings, the sound quality is sometimes less-than-ideal, but where else can you find such a large body of his studio recorded work? A no-brainer for folk fans and early-American historians.

Any Woody Guthrie fan would love The Asch Recordings - my favorite is This Land is Your Land.

２０年前に出されたのは知っていましたし、ずっとウディ・ガスリーは愛聴してきましたが、今の今までなぜかタイミングを逸して未購入のままでした。ただ、「プア・ボーイ」をはじめ、スミソニアンになる前のフォークウェイズの数枚のアナログ、折にふれ見つける日本盤のＣＤ、英リアル・ゴーン・レーベルのウィヴァーズ等々、ＣＤ移行後の３０数年に関して言えば、ウディについてはそれなりに充実していたように思います。それで本ボックスですが、タイトルの通り、フォークウェイズの創業者モーゼズ・アッシュによる録音が４枚組に１０５曲収められています。仕様は、上述のリアル・ゴーン・レーベルのようなデジパックで、解説、データは皆無ということはなく、マトリックス番号まで記した録音データと、各曲のメロディーの元ネタや録音時のエピソード等が掲載されたブックレットが付けられた、１枚ずつが独立したＣＤが４枚、しっかりしたボックスに入れられています。ただ、音質は、９９年にリリースされたこととも関係あるのかもしれませんが、ＣＤで聞かれる音ではなく、アナログの音に近いです。ノイズが同じように入るので、アナログを聞いておらず、いきなりこのＣＤでウディに接する人は、やはり戦前だなといった印象を持たれると思います。したがって、逆にアナログの方に親しんだ人であれば、こちらの音が好ましいはずです。

Endlich habe ich mir diese Compilation gekauft, als Fan sind mir diese Aufnahmen schon lang ein Begriff, und es ist schön, daß Folkways diese auch immer wieder einmal herausbringt. Die Tonqualität ist nicht die Beste, was aber an den damaligen Aufnahmetechniken liegt. Andererseits macht das eben den Charme dieser "Platten" aus. Kurz gesagt: Ich liebe Sie.
