Emma: An Annotated Edition

I bought this edition because I loved Emma and wanted to give it as a present to my teenage daughter. This is a big volume, but very pretty. It's always difficult buying someone a book but I feel I'll be giving her more of a THING to hold and savour. My daughter's birthday hasn't happened yet but I think she'll like it. The notes and illustrations have been well chosen to give a feel for the times and the culture, and what the spaces and people would have looked like in Austen's day. I also like the fact that you can enjoy these either while reading or as an appetiser, by dipping in and out of the pages. It's so nice to be able to take a less direct line through a really good book.

I have only read part of this book so far. I thought that I knew the story fairly well, but have been surprised at how much more I have taken in due to reading the annotations alongside the story.

This is very clear and easy to read, and of course the book itself is the work of a genius, One can only wish she had written more.
