An Overview for the Non-chemist
I just finished reading the book, but have not attempted to compound any detergents. What I like about this book is that it dispels the mysticism that so often surrounds technical subjects. The book provides a good overview of concerns that any beginner should consider. Moreover, the author gives nuts-and-bolts advice about how it was done in real-life by a small business. That's actually priceless. One of the most challenging aspects of doing anything yourself is the self-doubt that any sensible person experiences when they first begin. For example, by discussing safety and equipment, if only briefly, the author offers a tremendous balm to anyone who wishes to explore this path. For those who wish to make a business out of this, the author shares a few interesting stories from his personal experience. Of course, times and business environments change. I personally don't plan to make a business out of this, but still felt that I gained valuable insight about life by reading those aspects of the book.Much of this book consists of recipes for detergents of various applications. I, personally, would have learned a lot, and greatly enjoyed it, if a few recipes or ingredients had been selected and given a quasi-scientific treatment, as a chemist might try to explain to a layman. However, the author did do something along these lines with one recipe, in the vaguest of terms, without getting into chemistry; so perhaps he went as far as he could, and should, in a book of this type.In the end, I am left with more questions than answers, but in a good way. I don't intend to rush out and start mixing chemicals tomorrow, but thanks to this book, I know which questions to ask next. Another reviewer disparagingly referred to this as "bucket chemistry." I'm tempted to call it bucket chemistry, too, but I think that's a good thing, as far is it goes. If I'd ordered a proper chemistry-oriented book on the subject, I might well have become lost or demoralized. Instead, I feel excited to go and learn about the chemistry, and now might be able to do so without losing sight of the big picture.Only you can decide if this book will provide you good value for your money. I bought the print edition of the book. For my purposes, I wish the printed book had cost me a little less. However, at the time of this review, the low price for the electronic edition makes me worry the author isn't getting paid as much as he deserves for writing a niche book of this kind.

Simplistic and narrow
An easy to follow introduction but is fairly out-of-date, ignoring many new raw materials now available. Many suggested fromulations but not too much gudance on further development of these.
