I've had mine for 5 years and it's still getting plenty of use!
It is unfortunate that rite in the rain does not make this pouch anymore. I had c1700 before this but, it was stolen. The craftsmanship is superb. I've had mine for 5 years and I've used it and it is still holding together very well. the only thing that did not last with this pouch were the belt clips. the belt clips are made by Tactical Tailor and become very brittle in freezing temperatures. Mine broke off 2 years ago and I replaced them with A.L.I.C.E. clips and they work pretty well. They get a little rust from time to time but, easily cleaned. Right in the rain doesn't make any of their belt pouches anymore which is really unfortunate because they were very sturdy and worth the money. My only gripe is I wish made them in black but, they only made them in tan. So, to fix that I sharpied it. Looks like crap but, I can use it in my work uniform now.

Well done
I've been using this pouch near-daily for several weeks now, and my overall impression is that it's a quality product. The materials are high quality, the stitching is where it should be, and the elastic strip keeps my pencils/pens/Sharpie/acid bottle in place. There's even a second pouch behind the one for the field book, which works well for storing flat items like protractors. Overall, it's great. My two gripes:-First, when loaded with a field notebook and accessories, the top flap isn't long enough for the male end of the buckle to reach all the way down to the female end. This means you have to pull the two buckle ends together to get them to fasten. It still *works*, but it's a minor inconvenience each time and the tension makes the pocket material lay funny. A minor thing, I know, but it's the kind of issue that shouldn't be overlooked, especially by a company like J.L. Darling or Tactical Tailor (the actual manufacturer of the pouches).-Second, at just over 2", the belt clips are just barely too short to fit on a USGI pistol belt. They'll still hold it securely, but they won't clip around the belt, as they would with narrower ones.

Hands Free
The pouch was such an advantage to have during field trips and Summer Field for two years. It is super easy to take on and off, keeps your field book relatively free from grime, and gives you the ability to always free up your hands. I found it especially advantageous to have my field book near my waist when hiking uphill, instead of at the thigh (in a side leg pocket) like most in my cohort. I thought the price was a bit much for a pouch, but now after much use, I think it's worth the money.

I have been very happy with the pouch over the course of a year of frequent geological field work for undergraduate courses, including a field camp in scotland. I actually prefer the clips to belt loops because it allows you to put on and take off the pouch without removing your beth and allows you to slide the clips onto the waist of rain pants with no need for a belt. The rubber coating on the inside also keep my supplies completely dry, even in a week of constant scottish rain. its a little small for mapping that requires a lot of pencils and pens but the small size is very connivent to carry and store. If only came in an easier to see color it would be perfect.

Awesome, but be careful when unhooking
It looks and feels great. The only problems are the hard plastic belt clips make me think I might break them, if I unhinge them too much; a major issue I've had with this product though is the sharp edges of the strapping under the belt clips. Several times I've sliced open my cuticles on the field when I've reached behind to unhook the holster.I purchased some surgu (silicone sealing agent) to cover these edges.

Seems to work for drawing essentials
I'm starting to do quick sketches and needed something to carry a small sketchbook and several mechanical pencils. This seems to fit the bill. Holds the Moleskine Art Plus Hard Cover Sketchbook 3.5" x 5.5" along with 7 pencils, 4 packs of extra leads, an eraser, and my large cell phone. Will see how it works out in practice. Also have a "Battle Board" notebook holder coming to try out for comparison.

I'm a surveyor, I use this daily, makes my job easier. I removed the clip on the top flap, because my field book goes in and out so often, clipping it is a pain. Never had a problem with retention while not using the clip. I kind of wish the bottom clip was removable too. I carry a steel straight edge, job paperwork, field book, 3 pencils, a wooden keel holder, and a carabiner.
