Uncle Mafufo always tells his students: 'If you can say it, you can play it!' Forty years of playing Middle Eastern folk rhythms on the doumbek has resulted in this CD. Uncle M considers these rhythms important for the dancer or drummer to be familiar with to be able to rise to a level of expertise. There is material on this CD beyond the basics for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge or for players who would like to add to their repertoire of rhythms and variations. Armando (aka Uncle Mafufo) has written the modes in Dun, Tec, and Ca syllables (D, T, C) and printed them on the insert included with the CD for easy reference.

not dumbed down, and takes you from beginner to way ...
this is THE one to get to learn these rhythms, in my opinion, if you don't have a teacher or class--accurate, not dumbed down, and takes you from beginner to way advanced. I love it. I'm probably going to wear it out. I hope it never goes out of print. No words, no long explanations. Just get your drum and practice. The written part is JUST a summary of the each rhythm's CORE using dum-tek-ca and capitals to show emphasis; the major information is in the CD, where he does each rhythm plain and then fancier and fancier. You can listen and play the plain one along with him and do this over and over and over and you can hear and feel yourself improving. Then when you get in a jam you can at least not get it wrong and mess everyone else up. You still need to get with live musicians to really get the whole thing, but this is a great tool.

Best place to start without a human teacher
As a longtime hand drummer, I cannot recommend this CD highly enough. If you want to learn to play tabla for middle Eastern "belly dance" music you just can't go wrong with this CD. If you know a doum from a tek from a ka this CD will take you to the next level. It covers the breadth of rhythms in a totally clear summary that will give you the foundations you need to get started. You just can't go wrong starting here.Raq on!

One Ba-ad Mafufo!
Uncle Mafufo takes you on a guided tour of the rhythms of the Middle East including some Greek and Armenian beats. The cd progresses from simple 2 beat patterns through more complicated 10 beat forms. Liner notes contain transcriptions of everything. Not a lot of information regarding technique. But on the whole, Uncle Mafufo kills it!

Great learning tool, and fun. Not too simple, not too hard.

Excellent Rhythm Resource!
Great collection of basic darbuka rhythms! This CD was very good to practice with and seems very comprehensive. I was only aware of maybe ten different rhythms, but here are 25!

Better DVD s out there.
I have played doumbek for many yrs now, I have also started teaching how to play doumbek, Riqq and tar. While he knows the rhythms, and gets the sounds right the technique is like no other I have seen before. Like he learned from a guy on the streets of Cairo, who learned from his cousin. Not much practice time on it either.

Wonderful teaching tool
Uncle Mafufo always had his own spin on some of the usual rhythms, and this album is a great teaching tool for classes.
