Does the zipper tape fray as soon as it is cut?

Most tapes do not fray too badly and actually just stay stitch right over the end about 1/8 to 1/4 from end should do. However one of the best methods for using zipper by the yard is to learn to warp a tube of fabric over one or both ends depending on what you your project is. Go to YOUTUBE for videos on how to do this charming wonderful adaptation and you can use with coil or toothed zippers alike. It allows you to sew in a zipper without ultra bulk and thickness at the seams of a bag for example. Once you master the simple proceedure you can get very fancy and make say leather or extra miss or matched fabric ended pulls too on one end left open. Meantime to prevent fraying is so easy to stop with most tapes. As one person mentioned they melt the ends with a lighter however that only works on some tapes. If it's cotton it may not work and then zig zag the ends as described above or a tight straight stitch also works well to prevent further fraying in the future. If the tape melts then definitely use the melt method. I'll take down to my gas stove any nylon tapes, cords, zipper tapes, ribbons etc. that well melt and use my gas stove to accomplish pre-cut pieces quickly. But I also keep a bic lighter in my sewing drawer for doing it at the machine when I only have a few pieces to do. But I have arthritis and generic cheap plastic lighters are difficult for me to manage. Also a candle flame will work as will a wood burner tool. But the wood burner tools get gummed up and I went back to candles years ago and today the lighters and stove now and again. I used to sew Frostline kits for down jackets etc. where you melt all the edges of the nylon coat cut out pieces to prevent future fray and also that included ripstop nylons and also cording ends. I quickly moved onto making my own designs and patterns and purchase outdoor coated and uncoated fabrics of various thickness along with numerous sizes and styles of zippers. Anything that frays but will melt gets the heat treatment without thinking much about it as it's just part of any project. This tape really however does not fray much and you can protect it with the quick sewing off the cut pieces if you are worried about time and laundering results. To this day after over 60 years of sewing I have never had a zipper tape fray out of a seam.
