The Pilot: A Battle for Survival [DVD]

An excellent war film giving credit to the Soviet Union. The only film featuring the IIyushin II-2. State-of-the-art CGI bring these aircraft back to life on the screen. This is the story of a Russian pilot who is shot down and spends two weeks evading and escaping the Germans. This results in he having both feet amputated. He returns to combat flying wearing prosthetic legs as did Douglas Bader of the RAF. Be sure to go to settings to change the language to English.

This is essentially Soviet/Imperial Russian propaganda, but it is somewhat entertaining.

The USSR sacrificed more than any other country in WWII. This movie is a great example of their perseverance and inner strength. It's not like so many Hollywood war movies that are disingenuous, or filled with dishonesty and propaganda, or that are complete nonsense. Keep in mind, this a fictitious move, with a romance aspect, but based on real stories of real soldiers. There were many in their ranks, not just pilots, that overcame incredible odds as depicted in this movie, and their dedication to their homeland and people were deciding principals for them to return to combat. Even the campfire wolf scene was realistic. Strictly speaking, wolves are not inherently adverse to fire. There are multiple factors. Their current instinct, if there has been previous, multiple contacts with humans, which may include fire and smoke, weather, even curiosity, and of course, hunger level. Obviously, this is a foreign film. Just like Hollywood movies playing in other countries, the dubbing and captions are not always great. Taking into account this is a low-budget movie, they did good. Sit back, turn it on, and don't take it 100% seriously. Just enjoy it.

I like these Russian war movies, yeah, they can be seen as propaganda, but also as a tribute to the Russian soldiers that fought "The Great Patriotic War". This one is ok, not as good as T34, or Panfilovs 28, but it's worth watching. Great air combat scenes.It's a compilation of several real stories into one tale. I recommend always watching with subtitles. The dubbing is usually awful. i just wish somebody that watched this could tell me who in the world shot that German officer?!

It starts a bit slow but if you get over the first 5-7 minutes, it turns out to be a gem of a movie. No politics, no "comrade" hierarchy, simply a good blend of action, flying sequences, drama, love story and courage displayed by The Great Generation who knew how to fight, knew what they were fighting for and against and gave all they had to get results. Sad to say but this movie puts hollywwod to shame !!!It seems that we are not able to make such good movies anymore. Lucky we have others to fill in the gap. GREAT MOVIE !

Watched this as a silent film and w/o closed caption. Great cinematog, good story you can figure out, no wasted time on "juvenile buddy yak" as many war films made in USA have. This film gets to the action fast and has tense moments that keep one interested. The Russkies know how to make a good movie@

Very interesting to see a war movie made ftom a different country...especially Russia. The only thing thar bothered me was it was poorly voice over because they didn't have Russian accents

Not actually what I thought it was but I like it anyway... I believe what I was thinking of isn't a movie at all but a radio show played near or on November 11th
