Starry Night: Van Gogh at the Asylum

A very entertaining read
I've enjoyed this book very much. Clearly written and well researched, it does provide a very interesting insight into Van Gogh's stay at the Asylum and some of the characters he got to know there. The illustrations are especially beautiful (and of a high quality) and I particularly appreciated the closeups of many of the paintings. Not really a criticism, but I was left at the end wanting to know more and it is a pity that there is not more historical detail available about this fascinating period of the Artist's life.

Thoroughly engaging and informative account of Van Gogh's stay at the asylum.
This highly readable, beautifully produced book is full of fascinating details of Vincent's period at the asylum, as well as insightful accounts of the production and significance of the volume of works he created there. The numerous high quality illustrations include many of Van Gogh's most loved paintings as well as introducing the reader to yet more wonderful pieces. New research and discoveries by the author combine art history and criticism into a thoroughly engaging and informative exploration of this critical period in the artist's life and career.

Full of interesting information
Amazing book. I bought this after reading Bailey’s ‘Studio of the South: Van Gogh in Provence’ and the level of research and knowledge in both is just fantastic. It is so well written. A must have for anyone seriously interested in Van Gogh’s life.

Well presented book
Bought book for my father who is a artist and he found it very well presented and interesting, the day after I ordered the book it was £5 cheaper which is annoying, but a good present .

Highly recommended
Beautifully illustrated and meticulously researched. This super book gives real insight into Van Gogh's life in the asylum along with the other inmates. And yet he produced the most amazing paintings. Strongly recommended.

Intelligent, highly researched, great read
My husband & I read this and the other 2 in the series. We love VG's paintings, have a lot of books on him & his work. No art speak, simple but pertinent description of the paintings, there is no critical analysis. This is VG's life at the time, what paintings he did when and where and what he was thinking or writing at the time in these last crucial years. Bailey's research is thorough and he has uncovered an astonishing amount of new stuff from a field I would have thought was well mined...for ex. showing a photo of the registration of VG in St. Pauls asylum. Illustrations are plentiful and beautiful, highly enjoyable books. Very glad we read them.

Livro excelente, vale mil estrelas. O problema foi o envelope que a Amazon embalou que nao vale estrela nenhuma. Amazon, o que está acontecendo? Um livro de quase 300 reais embalado em um envelope vagabundo. Economia porca e sem sentido.
