I read in the reviews, that the base is solid, but the coasters are printed Cardboard?Nope, the coasters are solid ceramic, with a printed top.So yes, a quick coat of varnish / glaze, laquer or similar will certainly be useful to stop spillages b coming permanent, but I always have a can of varnish about so was a matter of seconds to coat the top, let it sit for 24 hours then ready for tea / coffe /juice spillages.I use spray one coat clear yacht varnish for most things, it comes in gloss or matte, and has a fairly good heat resistance ( used it to varnish some Moroccan tile trivets), is waterproof, and is UV resistant ( I e. Sitting in the sunlight isn't going to make it crackle, crumble or go foggy) and you can buy a can here on Amazon.Also....the packaging is such, that you could, if you are careful, take the coasters out, varnish them , leave to dry for at least 24 hours, and pop them back in, and give them as a gift, if you don't think the recipient can bothered or is too young to carry out this simple task.Easy.Just saying,5 minutes spraying one coat, do nothing for 24 hours, and voila, save damaging a lovely item.I am not sure why the manufacturer doesn't do this but it really isn't such a faff to do it yourself.The base, is as others have said, remarkably well done, I really wasn't thinking it would be this good at this price.I just needed some more coasters for visiting friends to use, they all descend in droves, but am pleasantly surprised.The coasters sit neatly in the dragon, but have enough room so your are not struggling to get them out.The coasters are weighty, as they are thick ceramic, which I am doubly pleased about because that should heat shield my table.Overall a jolly good set, that is sure to please a dragon lover.

The product is very nice and came as described but when I opened the box some pieces were broken off of it despite it being in styrofoam.
