A Beautiful Tribute to Friendship - With Just a Hint of Time Travel
Once Was a Time is one of the most beautiful stories of friendship I have ever read. I am a huge fan of "When You Reach Me" by Rebecca Stead and that book is often mentioned in the same conversation as "Once Was a Time." Both books deal with the concept of time travel, but not in a science fiction way. The concept of time travel is really a peripheral idea. The story is about a young girl named Charlotte and her friend Kitty who live in England during World War II. Charlotte's father is a scientist for the British government, studying the idea of time travel. One night, Charlotte and Kitty are kidnapped. Just as tragedy is about to happen, Charlotte finds a time portal and jumps through it. She is instantly transported to Wisconsin in 2013. Here she begins a new life as an American teenager, complete with mean girls and overprotective foster parents. Then, one day, something happens that changes Charlotte's life and sends her on an incredible journey to find Kitty.I loved this book. It was exciting and beautifully written. There are many different tributes to other beautiful books, including "A Little Princess." And, not to give anything away, but the end, which could have been extremely cheesy or overly dramatic, was just about perfect. Seriously, I had a tear in my eye as I read the last page.I would definitely recommend this book for middle grade students. It is probably appropriate for children toward the end of 3rd grade, but would be a great read for students in the fourth grade and up.

Great read at any age
"In the war-ravaged England of 1940, Charlotte Bromley is sure of only one thing: Kitty McLaughlin is her best friend in the whole world. But when Charlotte's scientist father makes an astonishing discovery that the Germans will covet for themselves, Charlotte is faced with an impossible choice between danger and safety. Should she remain with her friend or journey to another time and place? Her split-second decision has huge consequences, and when she finds herself alone in the world, unsure of Kitty's fate, she knows that somehow, some way, she must find her way back to her friend. Written in the spirit of classic time-travel tales, this book is an imaginative and heartfelt tribute to the unbreakable ties of friendship." This book is as described - an enjoyable read for any age.

Wow
I loved this book. Lottie and Kitty had a friendship that stood the test of time. Literally. When Lottie went through the time portal in 1940 to save her own life, she found herself in 2013 in a small Wisconsin town.As she adjusted to her new life there, she struggled with the guilt of leaving Kitty behind to die. But, then she found a clue in a book that Kitty had left for her.Kitty didn’t die that day in 1940. And she could still be alive.I spent the rest of the book turning the pages as fast as I could to finally get to the extremely satisfying ending. Just read it!

The Mystery of Time Travel
This was a fun book to read. I liked the use of history from World War II and today. Imagine being a 10 year-old girl living in England during the bombing by the Germans in WW II and suddenly finding yourself in 2013. You wonder what happened to your family and are able to use the internet to read about their lives and how they died. The ending was very satisfying with all the puzzles pretty well solved.

What a perfect story should be.
Reading my daughters books and this one is a top favorite. Great for girls and boys, Sales creates a fantastic build up tp the question of time travel. War, Friendship, bullying, loneliness, and the quest for answers is all covered in this story.

Just Fantastic
I loved not only the story but it's special characters in it. They came alive for me and I didn't want the book to end. I would love to see a sequel so I could see them again!

Different kind of book
I found this book somewhat not as good as I thought it to be . The first section was interesting after that I found it not that nice. I don't honestly liked the main character also . I found this book really confusing and sad . I don't found this book the right book for me that is it. Maybe some people may like it .I felt it an annoying read. Literally I don't want to give any negative feedback. Because I always respect the hardworkand dedication behind every published book . However I genuinely felt this is not the kind of read for me atleast .
