The practice book that inspires! Fun drills will spark song ideas and improve your skills for MANY years.
This is probably my all-time favorite practice book, definitely for keyboard and probably for any instrument! I purchased it 2.5 years ago and still use it constantly. My favorite part is that the author provides some discussion of music theory with the practice drills, but doesn't get bogged down in it. I'm almost entirely self-taught and (unfortunately) the result is that I'm generally slower to recognize even the fundamental elements of a piece (e.g., key signature, modulation) without guidance. The author's helpful comments explain what are the primary components of the drill (or section, as not every drill has prefatory text) and what's happening within the piece; even better, with this practical knowledge, I've been able to build from and expand on the exercise on my own, in some cases composing full songs inspired by the exercise. The drills are so much fun to play that's it's almost impossible not to get inspired! I continually go back and review all of the chapters, experimenting with my keyboard's drum beats, changing the tempo of the piece, combining exercises, subbing in my own improvised bits... you can practice with this book almost indefinitely, changing the way you use it as your skills and knowledge improve. I'd HIGHLY recommend this awesome book to nearly any player, including relatively new ones - beginners, just be patient with yourself and work through the exercises as slowly as you need to, and your skills/dexterity will grow! But especially if you feel like you're in a musical rut or a creative lull -- have fun with these exercises, put your own twist on them, and you'll amaze yourself with what you create. 5 enthusiastic stars from me!

Great resource
The book includes a lot of useful stuff, in every style. After going through the whole thing quickly to sample the content, I have been working my way through trying to master most every example. Taking a while but really useful stuff, the CD is really helpful. The part that is a struggle for me is figuring out how I apply the stuff in the book to the songs I am playing with the band. He starts with really basic chord changes, but then a lot of the lines are over nonstandard chord changes that might work or might have to be 'twisted' to fit, you have to hear it. I think it is going to come naturally, but it is a bit confusing at the moment.

Rock Keyboard Guide
Bought this book for reference material. It teaches 8 different Rock styles which have many different pattern drills(97) for left and right hands to practice to and some also play along with backing track that comes with the book. There are 97 backing tracks on the CD which let you hear what each of the example practice drills sound like and most of them go through the pattern drills twice.Examples are in easy keys, C, G, F, Bb, and Eb.The example practice drills throughout the book really don't pertain to any top artists persay, and there are no songs at the end of the book like some of the other books in this series. For me it is a good reference book on Rock pattern styles,Dave

A Very Useful Intermediate Book
A great book that includes valuable fingering notation. You should know how to read music, though fluency is not required and the CD examples help re-enforce any question on rhythm. I would recommend listening to the whole CD, marking off the tracks that a "within reach" of your ability and then doing those exercises only. Work the right hand, work the left hand, then maybe try to put them together. Only gripe is sometimes they give you impossible right-handed chords...you could easily shave a note off some of those 4-note chords as long as you have the left handing working. This is a minor gripe. The book is more piano-oriented though there are some raw keyboard stuff in later chapters (Southern Rock for example).

It's fantastic! I'm learning a lot and it's fun to ...
I'm classically trained, but my husband has been begging me to play keyboard accompaniment to his rock/blues guitar. I bought this to get a feel for it, having never tried to play in this style. It's fantastic! I'm learning a lot and it's fun to branch out and try something new. I highly recommend this book, and will be adding more to my collection.

Really helped me learn keyboard
This book made a real difference in my piano playing. So much so I got more books in the Hal Leonard series. The CD was helpful when I couldn't quite imagine the music (because I suck at sight reading). My piano skills did improve. My finger work improved. I went from beginner to somewhere intermediate with this book. I am not a very good piano player and can't sight read much at all, but I did get way better. The examples in this book were right on and lots of fun to play. Everything in this book was FUN.

Rockin'!!
Great intro to the different styles under the umbrella of rock. The progressions and patterns to practice will set a good basis for jamming in most rock, blues rock, and progressive rock bands.

Ottimo libro

Rock On!
