Captain Jack and the Pirates

Lovely Book
I read this book to my preschool class before introducing them to a surrealist artist and creating our own surreal animals. Captain Jack is a great opportunity to talk about imagination, dreams and things we create in our minds that are not real, good and bad. We talked about how fun it is to use our imagination and do pretend play. Captain Jack is a darling story with beautiful pictures. I noted one reviewer complained about the nautical vocabulary being too advanced for preschoolers. I took this as a great teaching opportunity and I set up a water tank in my class with materials for them to make boats that will float and hold little plastic bears. We used the vocabulary from the book with this physical science activity.

Lovely book!
My daughter and I are fans of this author and illustratorโs work together. We bought this because we loved King Jack and the Dragon. This book was also very enjoyable, but the first one has one a special place in our hearts.

and excellent vocabulary, and the pictures enhance it perfectly
Borrowed this book from the library and had to get one for home. The story has a lovely rhythm, and excellent vocabulary, and the pictures enhance it perfectly. The story encourages imaginative and cooperative play by following the boys' pretend pirate adventure. Personally, I liked this one much better than the companion one, King Jack and the Dragons, but my 3- and 5-yr-olds seem to like both.

Captain Jack is a winner!
I love the Jack books and this one does not disappoint. However, as we live inland, the classes I read to are not at all familiar with the sailing terminology used in this book. A new adventure for all your f us. As in the last book, the illustrations are wonderful and the story is new and captivating.

Even girls like pirates :)
Of course my 3-year old daughter loved it! The story is cute. But I felt like King Jack and the Dragon had a better rhythm to it. If you're debating between the two Bently books, go with the dragon :)

Imaginative
Very imaginative and kinda has a rhyme scheme to it. My younger two love it.

Too many obscure words that neither child nor parent will understand
Great illustrations and a cute story, but nearly every page uses obscure, nautical words that make it harder for a child to understand what's happening. It's OK overall, not awful, but I regret buying it.

Great story of adventure and wonderful illustrations
We only opened today and already read it multiple times! Great story of adventure and wonderful illustrations. My 3 year old was utterly engrossed and I have had lots of fun doing my best pirate impressions.I also love that the book represents different ethnicities in it's illustrations, which makes it very special to me. A true and beautiful reflection of the world that I and my family live in. Thank you very much to the author and illustrator, for validating adventure for one and all.
