Q: Does anyone use this type of product with Linux based computers, if so what file format do you suggest I use

ZFS, BTFRS or EXT4 is a good choice for Linux. If you want compatibility with Windows/Mac, then use exFAT.

Q: Can this be used interchangeably between Mac and windows or can it just be setup for one at a time?

You can use this (or any external hard drive) with both Mac and PC if you format the hard drive to be in FAT or exFAT format. If you format them to be in APFS or HFS formats (Apple's own file system formats) then no PC can read or understand them.

Q: Can I run programmes on this as opposed to using the laptop hard drive?

hat's the whole idea. I store all of my photos and video files on external drives. These are the best IMO by quite some distance.
