Fuzzy Duck

a must for classic uriah heep fans
i know this cd has been issued a few times over the past 10 years, i guess its high in demand i dont know but what i do know is i first heard fuzzy duck a long time ago and they reminded me of the salisbury, look at yourself, magicians birthday era of uriah heep almost exactly. this is a classic hard rock british album out of the uk in 1971 when uriah heep where on there way to stardom, also there are some early deep purple elements here to but more on the heep side i feel with the amazing guitar wailing and the organ so powerful and what a great vocalist they had, it is to bad we did not get more then one lp and 2 45s from fuzzy duck back in the early 70s, who knows maybe they could have really became something, this reissue on esoteric is fantastic with the best remastering as of 2012 possible outside the japanese shm mastering, the powell family did a great research job on the liner notes as well, this is totally for 70s hard rock fans, very powerful, pretty damn heavy and just all over the place in many aspects but a very tight band that sure knew what they where doing and where they wanted to go, im sure an original lp copy of this cost quite a few bucks so i will settle for this great reissue, i honestly could not help but think of jon lord when i was spinning this yesterday ( hence jon died one week ago today) if you where to tell me jon had appeared on this and i did not know any better i would belive it, in plain stating if you liked URIAH HEEP, DEEP PURPLE, WISHBONE ASH OR EARLY ELP then there is not a question in my mind that you wont love this cd!!!!!!!!!

good stuff
Originally saw this album on youtube and the cover intrigued me. The music is solid. A lot of these early seventies bands get lost in the shuffle. It is good that we can "rediscover" this stuff

my mind is fuzzy!
Before I mention what the music of Fuzzy Duck sounds like, please believe me when I say this album cover is clearly one of the worst I've ever seen. It literally makes me sick to look at! An afro-sporting, dope smoking, hoity toity-like purse wearing DUCK! AHHH!!! Is he going to get his hair done? Is he going to hang out with his high society friends? Nasty stuff! The kind of stuff to permanently change the way I look at ducks! I'd place such a tasteless album cover in the same despicable category as Fleetwood Mac's Mystery to Me and Supertramp's debut to create the three ugliest album covers ever, haha! With that nonsense out of the way, you're probably wondering what the music's like? Well I have good news for all Deep Purple and Captain Beyond fans out there- this album is almost exactly in the same category as both artists (think early 70's Deep Purple in particular, such as "Hard Lovin' Man" and "Pictures of Home"). Melodic keyboard solos, Ian Gillan-like soaring vocal melodies, anthem rock tendencies and chugging rhythms with terrific drumming makes up Fuzzy Duck's 1971 effort and I personally couldn't be happier! This is what I call a quality hard rock classic. The longer tunes such as "Mrs. Prout" and "In Our Time" stand out as classics but honestly every single song is almost equally terrific. Hey how often can I say ALL the songs on an album are so good that it's nearly impossible to pick one track that stands out? Not often!Oh and the bonus tracks? They happen to be much different from the regular tracks. I'm sure there's a reason for this that I haven't read about yet, but these four bonus tracks are really magnificent. They're based more on the blues and well, the bonus tracks have vocal melodies that do NOT resemble Deep Purple or Captain Beyond in the slightest. The band is going for something else here. "Big Brass Band" reminds me of the Five Man Electrical Band (you know, the band that did "Signs"... "and the SIGN said long haired freaky people need not apply?" Yeah you know this tune!) or perhaps a similarity to Lobo isn't out of the question. "No Name Face" seriously reminds me of Richard Sinclair from the progressive Canterbury rock band Caravan oddly enough. Another song reminds me of Phil Mogg of UFO fame.Overall, this is good time hard rock at its finest with a touch of adventure and epic qualities, but most certainly rocks! Pick up this underrated classic... and cover up the ugly duck on the album cover with a piece of scotch tape. :)

the memories may be fuzzy, but not the music
WOW! Now THIS is the kind of rock music I'm looking for when I think "underrated".Fuzzy Duck has a style that's not much different from classic Deep Purple, but I tend to think since the focus is more about songwriting with these guys and less on extended jams, that they should be compared more to Captain Beyond. This band seriously has "it". You know, that special feeling when you hear a rock album and KNOW the band should have been bigger than they were because of the talent that immediately catches your attention."Time Will Be Your Doctor" has a lot of funk and a splendid way to open an album. From there the band is definitely not shy taking their music in a thousand different directions, and this is one band that's so TIGHT and so much in tune with what they're doing, they made sure every single moment of the album was filled with little ideas such as guitar solos, keyboards, vocals, bass guitar, etc. NO boring moments anywhere, and nothing that drags on too long.Fuzzy Duck seemed intent on making sure the listener focuses entirely on the music for the ENTIRE album, so the songs are written in a way where you know every single second of the album counts.I think "In Our Time" is my favorite song because of the immediate comparison to Deep Purple (I mean, it sounds a lot like Deep Purple it's not even funny, but this is definitely not a BAD thing by any means). What's amazing is how the end of the album takes the music in a completely different direction with some soul numbers that really show off the lead singers range and style. I like this.I HIGHLY recommend this album to all Captain Beyond fans, and those who like Camel's first album. This is *exactly* what I'm looking for in my 70's rock. A perfect album really.

Seventies rock
Let me introduce you to Fuzzy Duck. formed in 1970 the original members were,,Ex Andromeda Grahame White guitar/vocals, Mick Hawksworth bass, Roy Sharland keyboards, and ex Tucky Buzzard drummer Paul Francis who not only bringing his skills along but also suggesting the band cover a old T buzzard song ,Time will be your doctor. and with hindsight The Duck do a much better guitar orientated version. so White leaves the band just as the album is released, his replacment Garth Watt Roy, his 1st recordings with the band was the highly infectious single, Double time woman . why this wasnt a hit must surely be down to managment and label not getting behind this! after all MAM were also looking after Tom Jones and, That chap with the piano and cap Gilbert O`sullivan. This is a great blast from the past pure 70`s rock, guitars keyboards tight drumming fluid bass lines. there is an Atomic Rooster feel but not quite so hammond organy and the vocals always seem to remind me of someone but cant put a name or band to. well worth the price on CD the LP can fetch up to 200pounds I would give 5 stars if it had been remastered!

Quality prog rock
Never heard of them during my days as a rock freak during the early 70's, but then if Sounds or NME or Melody Maker didn't cover them, as a band you were lost to the majority of young music fans. Bands like this were never going to be on Top of the Pops, and The Old Grey Whistle Test show only had certain time to dedicate to the many wonderful and diverse bands at that period. What a period it was, so many unique and talented bands they blew your mind with choice and new original styles and sounds. Fuzzy Duck went under the radar sadly. If you were into Sabbath, Purple, Floyd, Alice Cooper (pre Muscle period), Uriah Heep, Yes, UFO, Humble Pie, Argent, Zepp, Aersosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Atomic Rooster (Death Walks period)Doobie Brothers (pre Takin' it period) then you would love the Fuzzy Duck. Its inventive and talented and just good rock with thought.I like my vocals and lyrics to be listenable, not mumbled or shouted or annoying meaningless rubbish, so a vocalist who can sing and project words that are worth listening to scores well with me, and FD are very easy to listen to, and so you can explore and appreciate the depths of their music. They are another of those one album wonders who disappear after making it, they show so much promise but go separate ways sadly. However, once you've found this album you'll not forget it, and like me, wish you'd found it 35 years ago or more.
