The Francisca is a throwing axe used as a weapon during the Early Middle Ages by the Franks. It was also used during the reign of Charlemagne. Although generally associated with the Franks, it was used by other Germanic peoples of the period including the Anglo-Saxons. The Franks threw their axes before hand to hand combat with the purpose of breaking shields and disrupting the enemy line while possibly wounding or killing an enemy warrior. The weight of the head and length of the haft would allow the axe to be thrown with considerable momentum. The Francisca also had a psychological effect, in that upon throwing of the axe, the enemy might turn and run in the fear that another volley was coming This is a very nice authentic reproduction of this amazing and unarguably one of the most significant edged weapons in history. The head and blade are cast from high-carbon steel. Together with the hardwood handle, our Francisca has both the look and feel of an original. Your militaria or weapons collection cannot be deemed complete without a Francisca. Grab yours now while our stock and low price lasts.
