This kit is mostly intended for older steel fenders. Generally the braces are attached to the fenders with 1 or 2 rivets per stay. These rivets often rust then look bad, loosen up and allow rattles or break off and create a safety concern. All of these ills can be easily cured with one of our stainless steel repair kits Flip the fender over and drill out the old rivets with a 3/16” drill bit. Fix all dents and paint as desired. Then put it all back together with the parts from our kit. You will need a 3mm Allen wrench to drive the head of the bolt and an 8mm or 5/16” wrench to turn the nut The washers in this kit are special pieces with black neoprene bonded to the stainless steel. This rubber really helps eliminate rattles in your fenders. The black rubber has a slightly smaller inside diameter than the stainless steel portion of the washer. This keeps the circles of the washer and the bolt head perfectly concentric The stainless steel lock nuts are nice also. The nut and bolt approach is so much more exact than the hammered rivets procedure. You can easily achieve the perfect tension with this type of fastener There are several styles of heads available on bolts. We feel that Phillips head, slot head and hex head bolts all look too “automotive” to be a trim piece on a bicycle. Our bolts have socket button heads that a very good looking and adds a nice touch to your bike You might save a little money by simply replacing the old rivets with new plated steel rivets or zinc bolts. However, it will only be a matter of time until the rust comes back. Why not do it right and use stainless steel fasteners?
