Detachable Rear Bicycle Derailleur Guard - Protects The Bike Rear Derailleur During Transport and Storage

I frequently take my bike on out of state or out of country trips. I either ship it (shipbikes.com) ahead or take it on the plane. I've used massive amounts of bubble wrap in the past to protect the derailleur. For a trip a month ago, I decided to buy this Bopworx rear derailleur guard. It was easy to install (using the special "quick release" , not the regular wheel quick release, that I always use to protect the rear triangle between the dropouts. It did stick out further than the large bubblewrap balloon, and was not compressible like the bubblewrap is But it is easier to use and probably more effective.

Overall, this is a very clever and well made device to protect your rear derailleur from damage. Just a couple of minor issues. First, this is meant to be used with the rear wheel in place. If not, you'll need some adapter to hold the chain in place. That device is available from Bopworx, but the need for it was not obvious enough when ordering, so I had to make something to allow it to work optimally. Also had to remove the rear rack as the rack bolt clearance from the Quick release bolt was not enough t allow the protector to attach. Minor annoyances overall.

The concept is great and the quality appears to solid (quality-wise = higher marks), ...but it does not fit a mountain bike derailer (at least not mine, Santa Cruz). It doesn't appear to be returnable either. For these reasons I'm putting fewer stars.

This product is easy to use and works great. It installs easily and can be tilted to provide maximum protection for the rear derailleur. It's built well and provides strong secure protection. I suggest folding the rear derailleur into the smallest position possible to provide the best coverage.

I had been removing my derailleur every time I took my bike on a trip and packed it into the case - with this baby that step is eliminated. I always felt a bit worried about cross-threading the derailleur when putting it back on the hanger, so that problem is not eliminated.

Does not fit at all in standard bike cardboard box, thus useless for putting in moving van

Have used this a couple times to transport my tri bike to races across the country and abroad. While my bike case came with a derailleur guard, the Bopworx one is a lot more sturdy and the rubberized padding adds to my security. The Bopworx derailleur precluded my need to check in with the bike mechanic for repairs before race day. Would definitely recommend this if you've invested in a higher end bike.
