Beware for Classroom Use
I bought this as inspiration for students who were creating their own work inspired by Beowulf. The images and graphics are certainly captivating, but the creators took license with an ejaculation scene that was unexpected. I ripped out part of the book and clamped together the rest of the Grendel and Beowulf fight to avoid wandering eyes. Though I removed the scene in question, both Grendel and Beowulf have clear genitalia and at time erections during the fight. I still used it for them to experience Grendel’s Mother and the Dragon and the match with Brecca. Many did enjoy seeing it.

Essential!
This massive hardcover edition couldn't do more justice to Rubin's artwork. The story is great and well told and Rubin's artwork is parallel only to Paul Pope's (although it stands on its own, undoubtedly), and Chris Ware's (albeit in a different way) and is just simply well, a work of art. Conceptional, uninhibited, unhinged, expansive, beautiful, exceptional and lasting. Rubin's art is at the point of being necessary, addictive and essential. The book is well written but it is the artwork that steals the show. If you are a graphic novel reader or collector (and by extension, tired of the traditional superhero-for-retards fare) you gotta have this.

Stunning
A stunning new adaptation of the first story in 'English' we always return to as a species. But this is not just a Classic Illustrated version of the story, but ranks (in my opinion) up with the best prose and poetry versions of the text. It is a fully-realized piece of comics art that embraces its place in the tradition of our earliest, and scariest, monster story. Terrifying and surprising, Garcia and Rubin's Beowulf is comics storytelling at its finest, making the case that comics can tell a version of this story that we have never seen before.

A perhaps too "graphic" novel
First, despite my issues with this book, it is by far my favorite adaptation of Beowulf in the graphic medium. The artwork is stunning, and the larger size of the book only makes that stand out even more.My issue is that I would LOVE to use this book with teenagers who are reading this sometimes difficult text in school. I can't, because there are overtly sexual images in multiple places. The worst offender is when Grendel first encounters Beowulf. I don't want to spoil the scene out of respect for the illustrator, but it is far from subtle, and no translation I've ever read has interpreted Grendel quite that way with Beowulf. Then again, most of the translations I've read have been abridged, so there's that.

It looks like a metal version of samurai jack .. but with norse vibe
Its a big and i mean extra sized hardcover so points for thatArt - its cartoony like a edgy 1990s cartoonAnd the story is told well.Overall i took a gamble on this and was genuinely happy with it.

Five Stars
A beautiful and grisly adaption of the classic epic poem that really brings the tale alive!

Teachers beware
I ordered this for an ELL student who wanted to access Beowulf but didn't have the language skills...thought it was a good way for him to visualize and translate shorter text. But Beowulf is naked during the fight scene with Grendel. So maybe not the most appropriate cartoon for school. Cool graphics, though!

Beowulf
Well drawn and the story is very blood thirsty, sometimes wince inducingly so. Beowulf, rather than a mighty hero often comes off as an arrogant oaf. Other than that its a great story.

He was very happy with it
My son received this book for Xmas. He was very happy with it. He appreciated the graphic art and it reminded him of his days taking English Literature.
