Virgin Classics releases the official motion picture soundtrack to Michael Haneke s critically-acclaimed drama Amour. The soundtrack features Alexandre Tharaud, who also appears in the film, playing works by Schubert, Beethoven and Bach-Busoni. Winner of the Palme d Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Amour is a story about Georges and Anne, an elderly Parisian couple who are retried music teachers. The couple faces terrifying questions about life and death after Anne suffers a stroke that leaves her partially paralyzed making playing the piano impossible. Making his film debut, Alexandre Tharaud stars as Georges and Anne s star pupil. In the film, he performs music by Schubert, Beethoven and Bach (arranged by Busoni). The soundtrack features these works along with further pieces by Schubert and Beethoven. The Guardian described Amour as a moving, terrifying and uncompromising drama of extraordinary intimacy and intelligence ... This is film-making at the highest pitch of intelligence and insight. Haneke's mastery and supremacy have resounded here in Cannes like an orchestral chord.

5 stars is a personal choice and should not be used as a reference for buying this CD. I saw the movie and was moved by the Beethoven Bagatelles which I was not familiar with. I wanted to hear them played by the same artist who performed them in the film. I do not know this pianist and like his playing very much. I also bought another recording of the Beethoven pieces by another artist for comparison and for a more complete selection of the Bagatelles. The pieces are beautiful and well played on both CDs. This CD in particular, the movie soundtrack, is not expensive and has other pieces played by the same artist which I enjoy as well. So, purely subjective and experimental reasons urged me to buy this soundtrack. I am happy with my purchase. If you have seen the movie and liked the music compiled for the film it's a good choice. However, if you just like the Beethoven Bagatelles and want to hear them in greater depth, I suggest the Christoph Eschenbach recordings. I bought them as well and praise them highly.

You don't need to see the film to appreciate the music!
Alexandre Tharaud has only a short scene at the beginning of the film, but music and his art as a pianist play an essential part in the drama; Schubert's Impromtus (Op90,No.1&3)and Moment musical No.3 opus 94 and Beethoven's Bagatelles(Op.33 no.2&4) are part of the repertoire which Anne (Emanuelle Riva), the central character and teatcher of the young pianist, encouraged him to play at the beginning of his carreer. The music recorded on this Cd will help remind vewers of the intensity of the drama, but also of the depth of its purpose. The two scenes between the protagonists ( E.Riva nd J.L.Trintignant, audio only) added at the end as a filler do not add much to the enchanting performances of Alexandre Tharaud, clearly one of the greatest and most sensitive pianists of this generation.Michael Haneke made a great and wrenching film but he also made great music the secret and soothing center of the drama, Praise to him!JFT

You should watch the movie before buying this CD
because, once you did, you'll be sure to continue listening to his piano. The rare recording of Tharaud's Beethoven is a must for his fan. It is so delicate, subtle, yet very expressive.

Was ist LIEBE?
