A Short Introduction to the Hebrew Bible: Second Edition

Well written, comprehensive, plenty of references to allow those interested (or confused!) to read further. My only negative comment is that it is very much condensed, and my ignorance of Middle Eastern history has made it difficult to appreciate some of the parallels drawn. The biblical analysis is very interesting and enjoyable to read.

One of the best textbooks I've ever been assigned. Collins is concise yet provides a good overview of the general agreements and debates within the field. His frank, sometimes humorous tone keeps the reader engaged. For anyone hoping to delve further into specific issues, each chapter includes an extensive list of primary sources, commentaries, and studies to explore.

Not bad, and a good use for my Hebrew class. However, this was an introductory course where I had no knowledge of what was in the bible prior to reading this class, and at times I felt this author assumed I should have more knowledge than I had. I am not sure if this is an issue with the book or class, but I'm not sure this is a great "introductory" book to the Hebrew Bible. The book assumes some knowledge of the Bible and stories & characters within.

I purchased this book because it is required reading for one of my courses at Seminary. It is what I would expect for master's level reading material.

This is a great book for learning about the Told Testament of the Bible.

Purchased the ebook version so I don't have to lug around several heavy textbooks to my EfM sessions. I'm not a huge fan of this book. Collins make the Bible very understandable. As you read the Bible after reading his synopsis, I got more out of reading the bible.

This is the book we use in EfM training and it is clear and concise, with information that is understandable, even for the lay person. It is a real help in teaching the Old Testament.
