5243 Generac 16 KW Battery Charger
My Generac 5243 16kw which I purchased in 2006 wasn't charging my battery. I upsized my battery by removing the clamp above where the old battery used to sit thinking the generator needed more juice to turn over and the battery it replaced was 7 years old anyway. The new battery would die and it wasnt self starting weekly as it should. One thing I always noticed with my generator was if the unit was cranking with a fully charged battery it would start on the first or second attempt. With a slightly weakened battery it would take up to 5 attempts. I tested my battery this morning and it was pretty much dead and the unit would not turn over at all. I changed the charger. 8 hours later I disconnected the battery so I could test it and the battery showed a full charge. I reconnected the battery and started the unit manually. It started on the first attempt. This part worked for me. One thing to keep in mind is your going to have to work from the top and bottom to get the nuts off. Its really not a big deal although Im sure they should have set it up differently. My generator doesn't charge the battery when its running.

Up and running now!
My new starter battery kept draining because the trickle charger went bad so I replaced it with this component and everything runs great now. Replacing it wasn’t all that hard if you have the proper deep well sockets that are required. If you do this yourself PLEASE TURN THE BREAKER OFF before removing the electrical panel on the generator. Worst case you could kill yourself or just cause more damage to your generator. It’s not that hard if you take your time and know your way around basic march’s is and electrical systems.

My old charger was charging at 14. 4 volts ...
My old charger was charging at 14.4 volts causing the battery to eventually explode. (what a mess) This one has an additional capacitor that the old one did not and charges at 13.4 volts. I also added a 12 LED meter to my generator where I can check the voltage now by pressing a momentary switch.

Excellent and identical OEM replacement
Excellent OEM replacement part. Fit perfectly. FYI a tip: you need to remove the top panel cover to expose the assembly. But to access the screws, you need to also put a long socket (10mm?) from underneath, just above the 12V automotive battery. Be careful not to drop the two small nuts, insert the screws first then thread the nuts on by hand. It's a constricted space. Just be a little patient.Easy 20 minutes install

Fits perfectly
The part is an exact replacement for the original one. The labor part of replacing it is important so as not to damage anything else or yourself (installer). Use metric sockets, look up instructions for proper safety precautions and correctly installing it. Can be completed in less than 20 minutes.
