This is the best spiral cutter, IMO
Competitors have SOME of these qualities, but none of them have ALL these qualities.1) The blade is enclosed, making me feel safer.2) There are multiple sized blades and changing them was easy and safe.3.) There is a bowl to catch your spiraled vegetables, which comes with a lid for storage, and has a rubberized bottom for a no-slip grip.4) There is not a huge waste of vegetable; just a small disc of vegetable at the end for a snack while you cook.5) It is sturdy, compact, easy to clean, easy to use, consistently performs, and is a competitive price.I highly recommend it.

Disappointed in product design and limited uses
I bought my Spiralfix on the recommendation of a blogger. Despite some of the glowing reviews, I have found several issues when trying to use:.1 - The attached bowl is way too small to create long spaghetti-like noodles. After just a few rotations of zucchini, the pieces break and what you're left with does not resemble spaghetti at all.2 - This product is so difficult to clean even when using a brush to get in to the nooks and crannies.3 - I ended up having to use it on the kitchen table since it was tough to get the leverage to use on my counter. I'm fairly tall (5'8") but couldn't get the right amount of pressure to get the veggies to cut.4 - Worked best for potatoes, not as great for zucchini and carrots. The design almost requires that you have perfectly straight veggies, which isn't often the case.5 - I was surprised how fast the blade dulled - happened much faster than I would have expected. I've seen mention of dull blades in several other reviews as well.I recently purchased a smaller, less expensive, hand-held spiral cutter that works better for my needs.

Kinda neat. Kinda not.
It works ok on some things and struggles with others. The dense shorter root vegetables work well like beets and potatoes. The thinner vegetables like carrots and zucchini are much harder to spiral. Lengths need to be cut down rather short to fit which creates a chip slice of waste each time. The crevices are tough to clean - you'll need a brush or chopstick to get in there. The handle protrudes too far from the center so that a lot of torque is lost when applying pressure as you spiral and it makes the unit tip over from badly distributed weight a lot. What's up Germany? I thought you were engineering masters? Shorten that spin handle! The photos of people spiraling mid air must be fake. It just doesn't really perform that easily. The center peg doesn't do a good job holding many vegetables - especially those that are longer than they are wide.I do like the small footprint. It is an easy gadget to have around for spirals once you get the hang of it and navigate its grip, size and core limitations with some produce. Basically every spiraling unit has their pros and cons. This is up there of the choices available. I'd encourage a purchaser to try out different models though depending on how often you're using it and what you're looking for. For instance, this doesn't core pears and apples like other horizontal models. If you pre-core those, they don't peg on the center nub and shift about unless you apply tremendous pressure making thicker slices and as I said, that's a lot of wrist action due to lost handle torque.I kinda love it and it's kind of a pain in the patooty. My salads are prettier though (see my posted photos). My noodles and ruffles are more interesting in dishes. Uniformity of spirals varies depending on produce as I said above, however, I'm downing more produce and I even bought one for a diabetic child's parents who are monitoring carbs. I think it'd be super fun for kids even without dietary concerns. This unit is faster for that purpose than bigger 4 suction foot units. An added plus is the cutting edges are housed so little fingers are protected and they can join in the spiral fun. I believe that's important because kids tend to appreciate and consume foods they've had more interaction with in preparation (with supervision).Special note: It's only designed in Germany. It's manufactured in China. Also, BPA free options still contain endocrine affecting EA and other additives. Even polyethylenes have their controversies. I beg you not to heat or reheat in your plastics to prevent leaching those additives into your foods. I hand-wash this unit and many others, despite microwave and dishwasher melt ratings, for instance.

Great kitchen tool
I have used this spiral cutter many times now and feel that it does a great job in cutting zucchini and yellow squash, and even very large carrots, into thin strips for stir frying. We add spaghetti sauce and cheese to the zucchini and it gives you the feeling that you are eating pasta, if you use your imagination! There is only one negative about it. Your arm can get tired turning the handle and pressing down as you turn. After three squash, my arm is tired. But it is worth the effort for the great results. I just wish they would invent an electric version of this where the turning and cutting is done by the machine itself. The product is very well made. You can certainly tell it is not made in China. It is sturdy and of good weight with what seems to be a high quality plastic and metal construction. The cup that attaches at the bottom to catch the cut vegetables is rather small, but I just do one piece of zucchini and then detach the cup and toss them in a bowl, re-attach the cup and cut the next chunk of zucchini. It's not a big issue at all. So do your healthy eating desire a favor and buy this spiral cutter!

Makes veggies fun!
I researched every spiral slicer I could find, read everyone's comments, and watched all the videos. I chose the GEFU because there were few parts to deal with and it looked easy to clean. Indeed that was true. It was easy to make a space in my kitchen to store it, but it does not get stored for very long. The machine looks to be well made and sturdy. All cutting blades are contained within the machine. There is a rubber ring on the bottom so it does not slip on the counter. Because of my arthritic hands it was hard to push down and turn the crank on hard vegetables like potato, until I stood on my (one) step stool to get more leverage. Have not had any problem with turning since then. It is nice that the sliced vegetables are contained in the bottom cup. Clean the blades right away after using so you do not have to try to clean dried food off of the small, sharp blades The spiral veggies are so darned cute! I turned a large radish for a 4 year old and she gobbled it right up. The shapes are just so appealing--and not just to children. I have recommended this to all my family and friends.

Starkes Teil

Very limited
Works ok-ish with zucchini or other semi-soft vegetables. No good for anything harder, like beetroot. Quite disappointed, to be honest.

Darned Good Machine!
We bought our daughter the GEFU 13410 since we love ours so much. Close friends were over for dinner and enjoyed the zucchini and other veggie salad so much, they ordered one as soon as they got home, from amazon.ca of course. It is well constructed, and with a little practice great results will be achieved. There are several blade settings, just read the guide :) Cleaning takes a minute or two, make sure that you rotate the blade selector to clean thoroughly.
