Thoughtfully designed. Well made. Worth the money.
These are well machined and finished deck screws with features not found in other products in this category. Before you decide if these are the best screws for your project, it is important to understand the benefits of these various features. Starting at the top you will notice the star or “torx” drive feature. One can reasonably assume that 6 point on the star is more than 4 points on a Phillips screwdriver, therefore, because more is better, the torx will outperform its ancestor. However, the truly radical element of this design is the nearly total lack of taper on the bit. A Phillips screwdriver bit is virtually designed to climb out of its matching recess because of the way it tapers to a point. The walls of a torx recess are nearly perpendicular to the face of the screw. This allows for dramatically more torque to be transferred to the screw without risk if slipping. Since you want the screw to make the hole in the wood and not your screwgun bit, this will be an important benefit.Unless you are looking for it, you may miss the next feature, located just on the other side of the countersink screw head. On a standard wood screw, the angled surface is ground smooth, because it is expected you will drive a preliminary pilot hole near the same size and shape as the screw it will receive. If you drive a normal wood screw with just a screw gun and no pilot whole, the screw will sit slightly proud of the surface, because there is no room for the cone of metal. The screw is just compressing the wood out of its way much the same way as a nail would. On these Hillman brand screws, the angled surface of the head features six sharply raised ridges or nibs. As the screw is driven home, these nibs scrape out the wood to provide a matching recess so the screw can sink to even or if desired below the surface. The shaft features an aggressive thread pattern which will firmly hold your project together. Because it is finished with a protective coating reminiscent of Teflon, these screws drive in easily. That job is made even easier thanks to the self drilling tip which is the last features of this superior simple machine. It is this last feature, the self drilling tip that requires a word of warning. This item is a screw, not a miracle. The shaft of the screw is not designed to pull wood up out of the hole. Therefore, it you are driving these onto the end a a board, you will still need to drive a pilot hole. It need not be countersunk, but you can't drive a wedge into the end of a board and not expect it to split.I received nothing in return for this positive review. I rely on Amazon reviews all the time. This is my way of paying forward, and a small effort to reward a company for a job well done.

Good screws
I've used these for a while, and if cost was not an objection I'd probably go with stainless, but these are cheaper and I can get them in different colors. They work well, I installed entire fences without managing to strip any, although in removing an older piece of fence, I did find one or two failed screws (broken in half) after ~2-3 years. But really, that's 1-2 screws out of hundreds. One thing I'd suggest is to remember that there is a place for screws and a place for nails. If you are dealing with large shear forces, you may want to consider nails, or beefier screws.
