It helps -- A LOT!
I live in Arizona where the winters are super dry - some 16% humidity - and to add to that misery, we didn't get much rain during our monsoon season this year. When the humidity levels are under 30%, we get zapped by everything -- wall switches, fridge and oven handles, doorknobs, and yes - even the dogs and each other. This humidifier has gone as high as 77% in a small bedroom with the door shut. no more nose bleeds at night for me! I love that I can set the humidity level, turn off the light on the display, and crank it up to turbo to get the humidify up quickly. I would, however, change them to top loaders (I have a couple of smaller Air Innovations humidifiers that are top loaders; only difference is they have one tank, but they are a similar design and the same filter), and they gurgle pretty loudly at night as it cycles thru the water. that said - it's still a great humidifier and totally reliable, with great features and a great price point. Air Innovations all the way, baby!

Air Innovations - very quiet and very easy
We have gone through a few humidifiers and chose this unit as the best for function and capacity. We hope for longevity - haven't had many last more than one year. Time will tell with this unit. So far, so good. The Air Innovations has plenty of capacity - there are two water containers - and a remote control which keeps you from having to stoop to start/stop or adjust the settings. Nice design. Easy to fill - each water container holds a gallon which is easily carried. Easy to operate - turn it on and adjust the mist. The tower for the mist jet is ideal as ours sits on the floor and this gets the moisture into the room air for distribution. As for noise - there isn't any. This unit has no noise whatsoever. One note - the exhaust jet is unidirectional, not bidirectional. The photo makes it look as though the mist shoots in two directions - it doesn't.

How to avoid Problems
I have had 3 of these large units running for several years and have not had any problems at all. Some of the problems reported may be due to the following.1) Hardness of the water . My faucet water has a TDS (Total dissolved solids) reading of .036 That makes it soft water as hard water readings start at about 170. The higher the TDS the more likely you will get white dust on furniture.TDS = dissolved metals, salts, plant material, phosphates, calcium, etc in the water. If your water is really hard try using a Reverse Osmosis Unit.2) Temperature of the water. For accurate humidifier readings the water you put into the unit should have a temperature reading of between 65-75 degrees.Otherwise the internal humidity gauge which displays the reading on the front is way off until the water reaches close to room temperature. Especially if you used really cold water to begin with.3) Unit must be placed on a hard surface. There is only about a 1/4" clearance on the bottom where the air intake is.If you place the unit on something soft enough for the the 4 feet holding it up to sink down into it due to the weight of the water when added it will cause the entire unit to sink lower and block part or possibly all the air flow. Yes, I know you are concerned about water getting on and staining whatever the unit is placed on. But this is an important thing to avoid.4) Clean the unit often. Perhaps as frequent as every time you have to add water. Unplug it, empty the base unit of water and clean it. You can usually see any deposits that don't belong there forming.Note. All my units are placed on items that are at least 2 feet high with the higher humidifier extension attached. So the output mist is a minimum of 4 1/2 feet off the floor. They are set for max speed and 40% humidity.

Imperfect but Decent, (and probably the best in class)
I've had two of these units for about 5 years now and while the honeymoon is long over, I still would probably buy this again.Note that the capacity of this unit lists as 700 sq feet. Our bedroom is only 187sq feet with a 7.5' ceiling, (about 1400cubic feet) and even this unit struggles to get the humidity up to a comfortable level. Still, it's not a bad unit, no portable humidifier is going to be a substitute for old fashioned steam heat (radiators), or a whole house humidifier system. This one seemed like it might be enough for our master bedroom. It is very quiet and had the highest water capacity I could find among the more decorative units. But even on it's highest setting, I must run a second unit for about 3 hours to push the humidity of our bedroom up to 55%. I am not disparaging this unit, but I think mfgs do not provide realistic numbers with their stated capacities. If you have a large room you want to moisten up, you're going to need more than one of these, or invest in a really big ugly unit or a whole house system. Certainly the table top units you see listed on Amazon and in the housewares departments of retails stores will work only in the tiniest of spaces.Set up:Assembly is relatively easy, but the tanks are a little annoying to fit into the unit, and a bit of a challenge then the tanks are full. You'll note that it is held together by gravity. Bumping the tank and the neck do not inspire confidence.Filling the tanks is more of a chore than it should be. They are filled from the bottom, so you have to flip them over, the fill cap also doubles as the fitting to move water into the evaporator, it is a bit hard to grip, and difficult to loosen, especially when wet, and it will be normally wet since it's submerged during operation . The way there are designed, you can't let the tank just rest on the bottom of your sink or floor, you have to hold it up as it is filling, there is a very thin small plastic handle you can grab with 2-3 fingers, but I do not trust it's strength, since the tanks get a bit heavy and unwieldy as the reach capacity. I hold it from the handle with one hand and from the bottom with the other.Programming requires you read the manual. It is NOT intuitive, and there is an annoying loud "beep" as you enter commands to the buttons, but you can mercifully turn off the beep so you won't wake your sleeping family. The LED light is also extremely bright, but you can dim that as well.Operation:The unit is very quiet during operation, and I get about 2 days out of it before I have to refill the two tanks. It has several settings, but for all intents and purposes, you're probably going to need to run it on the "turbo" setting to get the room to a comfortable humidity in a reasonable amount of time. I always run it in turbo. It has a built in humidistat that displays what it thinks is the humidity. Using a separate humidistat, I have hot found the on-board sensor to be very accurate, it will say 55% humidity, but my room sensor will read much lower. This seems reasonable since the units sensor is right in the unit, so there's no reliable way to measure humidity in other parts of the room. I have to set the unit to 60-65% humidity to get the room's humidity to about 50-55%.Maintenance:As I mentioned, filling the tanks is a bit harder than it could be. Some minor design tweaks would address them.I've not had the units long enough to tell you how easy it is to maintain the inside of the tanks, but they have only one bottle sized opening. So if they develop any sort of scale, you're going to need a chemical process to remove any internal deposits. The evaporating unit does develop a film over time, but is fairly open, so I have been able to keep it relatively clean. But you will need to clean it from time to time.I might sound critical of this unit, and while I do have reservations, I'd probably buy it again since I don't think there's anything better that looks relatively decorative.
