[beams whooshing and pulsing]
It's decent, would give 3 stars since i can't figure out who is a human and who is human LARPing as robot or robos larping as humans and who is just a plain old robot. Also while it was one of the better shorts meiji-period mecha isn't robo.I digress on the nitpicking of the story arcs, it's hard to make a coherent short animation, and BTW the animation looks way good; there's enough stuff to keep you entertained while watching, as it really is a grab bag of different ideas. Definitely 7/10 eyecandy, but there are some shorts that feel like they were shoehorned in. At 90 minutes it's easy enough to sit through, and the multiple unconnected stories makes fast forwarding very rewarding.Highlights:*A robot(?) who LARPs as Bat from FOTNS*BALLS PRISON [see pics]*Questionably rayciss voice acting*some sort of robofantasia with a drunken Japanese business man and a moped who escapes with the help of (in spite of) nut mouthWhat pushes it to 4 stars is the subtitles;Whoever did the Amazon subtitles is a golden god and should be honored and acknowledged for concise word phrases such as:[ominous and tense synth music][robot pulsing][dreamy synth music][robot chuckling maniacally][tinkling electronic accent]If you watch only one movie for the subtitles this year, make it this oneyou won't be disappointed.

Robot Carnival
Set of several old short 1980's anime and cartoons. The first 43 minutes are absent of any speaking voices and the stories are told with the images and soundtrack only. Originally saw this years ago, over time I like it less. Some of the stories are imaginative, some are nonsensical as is often found in cartoons, and some have an underlying motivation. To watch this need to be in a low tempo mood with time to kill because the pace is very slow. The animation and soundtrack is in the style of the 1980's. Watched digital streaming with Prime Video.

Watched Again and...
Trying to watch this is like having your finger nails pulledEDIT 12/07/2020:Raised from 1 star to 3 (3.5)I watched this again and all the way through until ending and I have to say that if a person watch this while viewing it as western society/consumer culture/market economy, etc... corrupting the world it becomes easier to watch and the last few short films are somewhat enjoyable .

80's Creativity Probably Influenced Many
The creativity in this had to have influenced so many filmmakers. Like the beginning/ending scene possibly influencing Peter Jackson to make Mortal Engines? The steampunk giant robot battle short probably influenced Batman ninja. The peaceful melodic music in 'Cloud' knocked me out, was like a dream. It also gave me Déjà vu, perhaps I saw it as a kid in the 80's?

A spectacle for the eyes and ears
The best I can do to describe this anthology is as the love child of Fantasia, Heavy Metal, and the unapologetic early years of anime. Some stories will make you laugh, others flinch, some cry, and still even cheer... many (not all) without words.

really good anime
this was a really good show, better than the ones on netflix, there is a new netflix show that is a parody of this, called like "kill death robot" or something, i can't remember, but it is terrible show trying to sell ultraviolence and smut to children or something and really they are just inflicting aspergers/avatar syndrome on children too poor to afford network television...there is no smut in this anime series though so it is really good...

The 'Fantasia' of the Anime World!
Admittedly, I've only seen the version of Robot Carnival, but it was more than enough to leave me absolutely enchanted. This is not a movie, but a series of masterful shorts, set to delightful music. From the cheerful 'Starlight Angel', set amidst a futuristic theme park, to the darker stories, ranging from a Frankenstein's Monster concept, to a one man's night spent in a waking nightmare, to the nostalgic story of a man who'd built a robot girl, and how she influences his life.Whether the tales are humorous like 'A Tale of two Robots', disturbing, or pleasant, they're all worth watching several times over.Because some of the stories are a little abstract, and most have no speaking parts ('A tale of two Robots' is a regular, amusing cartoon short), it might be wisest to rent this video before buying. I can't reccomend it enough, though. Robot Carnival is the perfect film to watch during a rainy day, or just as a pleasant way to pass the time.

POESIE ROBOTIQUE !
