This story about an American woman who inherits an English estate her mother hid from her, is captivating. The characters come alive with the skill of the author. I didn’t want the story to end.

Secrets of the past being unraveled
The storyOlivia Shaw arrives in England after her artist mother’s death. She has only now discovered that her mother grew up as aristocracy, before moving to San Francisco and never speaking of her past. Olivia has inherited a vast estate and run down house. Will the food magazine editor be able to take on the work and life involved with her heritage? My thoughtsI have read a few of Barbara O’Neal’s stories and love her writing. This story takes you to the English countryside, into a world filled with societal expectations and taboos, and secrets of the past haunting the present. Olivia has obstacles thrown at her from every angle, but she is also weaving her way into the hearts of those around her. I love her unexpected romance with author Samir, and his unwavering support of her, despite their family history and their age gap. Another goodie from Barbara O’Neal. ❤️Read on KindleMy rating 4/5 - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Nice and slow
Definitely not a page turner however this book captured my heart, left me all giddy and hopeful. Olivia Shaw, excuse me, LADY Olivia Shaw finds herself heir countess of a 200 acre estate after her mother passed away. Oblivious to the history and the real reason her mother fled to the states, she travels to England to see to her mother’s affairs. Olivia suddenly realizes her mother knew she didn’t have long to live and had secretly set up a treasure hunt (she used to do this when she was younger) to finally answer the questions she’s been wondering her entire life. During weeks of research, Terrible news after terrible news plummets down hard on Olivia and she finds herself in over her head. She’s overwhelmed and can’t seem to figure out why she’s even trying. Help comes in a very conflicting package of tall, dark, and handsome who opens her eyes to the dark and mysterious life of her family’s history. What bothered me about this book was how very anticlimactic everything just felt. So much anticipation leading up to “the big reveal”. I think it made it so much more “eye rolling” because it was made to seem like her mother’s friends knew something but weren’t allowed to say anything because SHE had to figure out the answer herself. Yet the truth was revealed in a way the reader (at least for me) thought it wasn’t supposed to be and it still left her on the hunt for the treasure. I don’t know it’s so hard to explain. What I LOVED was how awakened Olivia was at the end of the book. How her mother finally told her life story through her passion of painting, and the only way Olivia was going to get this was her traveling to where it started. A story within a story. I enjoyed reading about the many details of all the foods she got to taste. Gave me a few ideas to try with my own dishes. Also the connection i felt to the characters grew as the story unfolded. I’m so glad she merry Pavi and Samir. After reading a few reviews and because I’ve read a book by this author I wasn’t expecting to actually like this book as much as I did. But I’m so glad I gave it a chance.

I love a treasure hunt!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It started off a little slow, but increasingly the plot built and my interest peaked. When the treasure hunt appeared I was hooked. This novel has wonderful characters, romance, history and mystery. It is a very good read.
