Recorded with the same group he had in the studio for SWITCH, Nils Petter Molvaer’s new album ‘Buoyancy’ is the logical continuation of its predecessor, whilst also taking the music a step further. Here the group works more closely as a unit and performs the music more spontaneously in the studio. A range of soundscapes, grooves and hauntingly beautiful little melodies emerge from the trumpet master’s instrument to create an intense collection of colourful paintings in sound. 'Buoyancy' : the ability or tendency of something to float in water; a cheerful and optimistic attitude or disposition. Molvær was born and raised on the island of Sula, Møre og Romsdal, Norway and left at age nineteen to study on the Jazz programme at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1980-82). He joined the bands Jazzpunkensemblet with Jon Eberson and Masqualero, alongside Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen and Tore Brunborg. Masqualero (named after a Wayne Shorter composition originally recorded by Miles Davis) recorded several albums for ECM Records and Molvær recorded with other ECM artists before his 1997 debut solo album, ‘Khmer’. The record was a fusion of jazz, rock, electronic soundscapes and hip-hop beats. Molvær's muted trumpet sound, sometimes electronically processed, had an obvious debt to Miles Davis's work of the 1970s and 1980s, but without being a slavish copy. He has recorded several albums since and has also produced film and theatre music.

Great continuation of Nils' breathy trumpet, heavy rock/jazz sound, this time with a very effective pedal steel guitar! Wonderful variety from ambient to full throttle groove, these cats are incredible. Odd, the picture shows a $16 U.S. Okay (Sony) label. Import???? Uhhhh......

eine kleine Molvaer - Sinfonie
Dass Nils Petter Molvaer mit Jazz, im üblichen Sinne, schon lange nichts mehr zu tun hat, bestätigt sich hier aufs Neue. Seine Klänge sind elektronische Experimente geworden. Von seiner Trompete wehen sehnsüchtige Tupfer durch die fein gewobenen Soundinstallationen. Der Charakter dieses neuesten Werkes klingt nach Geheimnis und auch Überraschung. Die einzelnen Stücke bilden eine kleine Sinfonie - man darf sich ruhig durch eine ganze Plattenseite tragen lassen. Für CD Käufer: starten Sie ab dem 6. Titel:"Lamna Reef". (das entspricht der B-Seite der LP - mein Favorit!) Für seine Anhänger ein lohnender Zuwachs für das Repertoire. Wer nach dem Debut "Khmer" aus 1997 immer noch dem rockigen Ansatz mit fettem Schlagzeug nachtrauert, wird sich jedoch kaum anfreunden können. Ich gebe gerne alle fünf Sterne, weil es in seiner Art wieder ein kleines Kunstwerk geworden ist! Ich hätte es nur nicht "Auftrieb" genannt, sondern Versenkung in geheimnisvolle Tiefen....

Meditation
Einerseits ist dieses Album kein großer Wurf im Vergleich der revolutionären Molvaer-Frühwerke "Khmer" und "Solid Ether". Andererseits ist es ein weiteres Meisterwerk des elektrischen skandinavischen Jazz, wie nur Molvaer (bzw. allenfalls auch noch sein früherer Mitstreiter Eivind Aarset) es hervorbringen kann: Ein ruhiger, mal verdichtet düsterer, mal licht weiter, mal langsamer, mal beschleunigter Fluss hörbar in endlosen Improvisationsübungen erarbeiteter, meditativer Fluss aus Harmonie, Klängen und Rhythmen.Experimentell ist dies nicht mehr, aber andererseits - was müsste NPM noch beweisen?Kaufempfehlung.

Le jazz moderne et nordique
Pour moi un des meilleurs albums de cette fin d'année.Jazz intense, toujours innovant et envoûtant comme sait le faire NPM avec une montée en performance tout au long de l'album. NPM nous fait plonger dans un univers de rêves mélancoliques alliant modernité et tradition; avec sa trompette et une multitude de bits et sonorités électro.La qualité d'enregistrement est tout bonnement excellente. La dynamique superlative. Les micro-détails sont parfaitement perceptibles. Bref, un mastering de très grande qualité qui rajoute à la qualité d'ensemble de ce nouvel Opus venu du froid.
