Even "average" head size might need extra large
I first bought the large. My head would not be considered above average in size but the elastic of the large fit too tightly. I exchanged it for the extra-large and it is perfect. This is a great cap if you have the kind of hair that, in the morning, looks like someone took an eggbeater to it during the night. I thought my husband would hate it but it thought it was cute!

Elasticity of the cap is not durable
The cap fit as expected. But after a few uses, the elasticity wore out.
