I used it with my kids. It was a fun experiment, but the base wood turned into black dust are wore down to nothing without ever making anything ember worthy. I went hard at it for a few minutes with a lot of down force, and the best I got was light smoke. The starter holes were also too small. You either have to round the spindle or drill the base for it to stay aligned.

I threw this rig in my rucksack for a hike with my three Grandkids. Stopped for lunch and asked the guys if they wanted to eat warm or cold. Of course the answer was 'hot!' I had a gas rig in my ruck also, but they didn't know that. I pulled out the SXTL and explained the concept and went to work. We had good hot chow (&coffee) The only downside is we weren't able to get back on the trail for another hour because they all wanted to make their own fire! :-)

We bought this for our grandson to teach fire starting “without a lighter”. Four adults could not even put it together! Then, it broke. This is the only thing I’ve ever bought from/through Amazon that I would not recommend.

Product is just as described. Has already started two fires with one of the drills and it works great.

I needed these for my brothers who are into the outdoors. Something more primitive than matches or a lighter, yet handy enough to produce a fire without too much toil.
