Great guide for boaters
This book has opened my eyes to the possibilities of what can be done while in the Grand canyon on a raft/kayak trip. I am preparing for my second trip in 3 years and this book has shown me all kinds of things I missed the first time. What I like:The hikes are organized in the book by river mile. This makes finding what is out there to do in a given stretch of river an easy task.Hikes all have accompanying topo maps with trails laid over them. This should help you orient yourself and find the hikes as you are floating down river.Extra info about hikes and camps included in the text. This helps as you can easily figure out which camps may be better than others for the possibility of an early morning or evening hike from camp and which camps will have morning or evening sunshine at different times of year. What I didn't like:The pictures were all lumped in a single section of the book so you had to flip back and forth to see the image from the hike and then read about it. The images were however well labeled so it was easy to find the hike from the reference image but not vice versa. All in all if you are planning your own trip I would recommend this as a guide if you are looking to learn more about highlights of what you can see while floating down the canyon

Useful Guide
I would actually give this 3 1/2 stars if I could. I took this along with me on a recent guided 2 week Dory trip and found it useful for providing context and and additional information for the hikes we did as well as giving information for the 100+ side canyons you float by. We also used the guide for a couple of very short hikes on our own from camp. In general most of the hike descriptions are pretty terse and I found the maps to be fairly useless (way too small). I could not imagine using this guide for any of the longer hikes unless you were intimately familiar with the Grand Canyon. He also does not provide any definition of what is easy, hard, etc... which could get you into trouble if you were not very competent. On an unrelated note, the author is apparently a pretty controversial figure within the Grand Canyon river running community and the park service (at least according to my guides).

Great book if you're rafting the grand.
This book was incredibly useful during our rafting trip down the grand canyon. It has some amazing hikes in it. I recommend the Thunder River/Deer Creek hike (#54). It would be even more useful if it had the mileage and elevation gain at the beginning of each hike. Instead, we had to look at the topo lines and guess.

Good for self-guided canyon trips
Love this book! Provides a lot of extra detail that even canyon-experienced friends on the trip didn't know. Personally think it's an essential part of any canyon trip, unless you are going with a guided outfitter. Then your itinerary will be set and your boatman/woman will know most everything of interest.

A must for every Grand Canyon River Trip
This is a great guide for side hikes in the Grand Canyon. Be aware that a few of the "hikes" are more like climbs or scrambles. We opted out of them since they were a little exposed for some of the members of our group.

Five Stars
Great reference book to take on your three week trip down the Colorado River. Tom Martin knows his stuff!

Adequate guide
The guide helps with some hikes. However, some are fairly self-evident and some updates are in order. Time of year is important to any user. We were out in the record heat at the end of June 2013 and most of the hike were contraindicated by the high temperatures.

Worst Book Ever
This book sucked. It has the basic hikes and then some but literally nothing was to scale and every hike had obscure details about it. Why not use landmarks and basic directions to tell people where to go? Or estimate hours? Maybe, oh I don't know, give elevation climb too? Pretty much every hike we tried to go on with this book sent us in another direction (aka not close to the final destination) or in way more dangerous situations. You're better off printing off the hikes and bringing a binder to the Grand Canyon than depending on this book (or find another option).

Perfect. Used it to plan our hikes and layover ...
Perfect. Used it to plan our hikes and layover days on our Lee's to Pearce run in November 2017. Info was on point, maps a bit out of style, but I won't complain too much about that. Highly recommend the full scramble up Eminence Break. Great layover camp too.
