The Beginning of Your Weeb Journey
This game is going to be a love it or hate it situation for some people.Let me ask you this, do you like games that are incredibly janky but oozes with personality? can you stand things that ordinarily would ruin any AAA game and would render them completely unplayable? do you often go through 'Steam' on the hunt for weird indie titles that none of your friends are playing because you're completely shameless? congratulations you're probably the kind of person who'd love Akiba's Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed. Now let me be clear, i actually love this game and it's sequel, this game is actually the first for those not in the know, and came out on the PSP in Japan back in 2011, so this is the first time the west actually sees this title, there may have been a good reason we never saw this though - it's extremely janky and probably would have sold abysmally had it actually been released over here, the combat takes a lot of practice to get used to, and it's contents would be considered very questionable. Also describing what it plays like.. imagine if you played a 'Yakuza' game, but instead of beating the daylights out of people instead you tried to rip their clothes off, that's basically it in a nutshell, but like 'Yakuza' it does have.. a few minigames or side activities you can play, not many.. but i didn't even expect it to have any in the first place, in terms of the open-world it actually has a lot more in common with the 'Way of the Samurai' series, with tiny yet open sections with a lot of character interactions and stores to buy different items from, or some aforementioned minigames.Like 'Way of the Samurai' or any other weird and quirky RPG-lite like this, it's not about leveling up your character, it's all about finding the best equipment then leveling it up, which is important if you don't want this game to get more frustrating than it needs to be.So yeah, if you like either of the two game franchises i previously mentioned, especially the latter, you may find this game extremely enjoyable, personally i think this game is unintentionally hilarious and reminds me of why i enjoy these sort of underdog low-budget Japanese hidden gems in the first place, but it is not for everyone, obviously it's a 2011 PSP game so it has a lot of flaws, so it goes without saying that some will absolutely abhor this game and i would recommend doing your own research before doing a purchase.Honestly i can't believe this got released in 2021, i'm so happy.10 men of culture out of 10 - buy it if you loved the sequel, the games previously mentioned, or if you're steeped in culture.
