The inner foam that we use is the exact same ester resin foam that is used in many high end commercial head sets designed for humans. Based on the materials used, the estimated decibel reduction is between 21 and 24, assuming proper fit and a good seal against your pup's head. That's 21-24 dB reduction in the human hearing range of 20,000 cycles per second, which is the only range that we have data for. Our canine friends can hear much higher frequencies (in the range of 43,000 cycles per second). As the frequency goes up, so does the effectiveness of Mutt Muffs, simply because the higher the frequency is, the more easily it is absorbed. Therefore, Mutt Muffs are especially effective at protecting against the high frequency wind whistles and shrieks we humans cannot even hear. There is another factor that comes into play as well. The dog's own ear flaps are down and covering the ear canal, providing yet another layer of protection, better even than placing your hands over your own ears. Mutt Muffs are designed not to block out all sound, but to be a passive, noise reducing device that will make a ride in the airplane a comfortable experience for your mutt. Review: does the trick - Seeing as my dog wears these, I really can't give an honest evaluation as to noise cancellation and comfort. But I can say that my dog adjusted to wearing these immediately. It's been an insanely hot summer, so the fans and AC run constantly, which means my apartment is never quiet. My old pup seems to settle down for the night without wandering as much when he is wearing these. Review: I have the Large and the Small - For some reason the large Mutt Muffs worked better than the medium set. My German Sherpherd slept like a baby in my plane, her head comfortably hugged by her set of large Mutt Muffs. Alternately, I recently flew with my little junkyard hound who wears a medium. The darned things wouldn't stay on her slippery little head no matter what I tried. She wasn't messing with them at all, but everytime I look at her, she was sitting there with them hanging around her neck like two bulging goiters, impeding her sightseeing ability. Since Mutt Muffs are not cheap, I was somewhat annoyed to say the least. I also worry about my dog's hearing when she's unable to keep them on her head.
