How to Make Clay Characters

It's a "manual" on how to work with polymer clay. Excellent book which I highly recommend to anybody who want to learn about this fascinating technique.

I'm new to polyclay, but I'm really excited at the possibilities that have crossed my mind as I read this book. It was all new to me and the techniques seem simple and clear enough that I can take off into another world of "folk" with all the ideas spilling out onto my notebook paper. Thanks to the author for well-written and illustrated pages, ideas, and inspiration. For the "advanced clay-er" this may be too simple, but being a crafter from other mediums, I often go back to the basics when I'm stumped for ideas for something new to try. If you don't find this book to your liking, please, donate it to your local public library. It's a fantastic find for beginners and young children who naturally create. My copy stays right here in my collection availale for my family to use to inspire them to try new things. Thanks again Maureen.

Love this book, lots of help.

This a great book for anyone interested in starting sculpting figures in polymer clay. Although the instructionals provided for the figures seem sort of cartoony and not realistic, these figures are very much life-like and animated. The author does a great job of providing clay type suggestions as well as proportion tips. Learn to sculpt animated faces as well as clothing and accessories. All these projects can be completed by anyone including beginners and experts. There is also a great section for making believable, life-like eyes!

Ms Carson is truly a master sculptor, and the clay figures in the book are nothing short of amazing. She gives step-by-step instructions on how to construct each figure, but there is no way on God's green earth that I could ever hope to make one. IMHO this book is almost like using the Mona Lisa as a project in a "How to Paint by Numbers" book. Buy this book if you want to see some beautifully crafted works of art or if you are a professional clay artist looking for a new challenge, but don't buy it as a beginner how-to on clay figurine construction.

While I do very little polymer clay work, I purchased this book just to see what it was all about. I doubt I would ever make any of the projects in it for a variety of reasons. In my mind, these are really very detailed and time consuming characters. However, for those that love this hobby, I think it's full of amazing information and inspiration, and to the polymer hobbyist, I would highly recommend.

Ms. Carlson's informative book will help you with ideas and techniques that are usually only discussed in very specialized or much more expensive books. If you are a teacher looking for something to really get your students into hands-on work, an artist working with figures, or into making (or want to make) Claymation movies - get this book. You can't go wrong. AND the images are delightful!

Great instruction book for anybody interested in professional clay sculpturing!!!!I read it once and now I create amazing clay sculptures myself!The book shows you basic and advance techniques of creating clay characters and also tells you what tools you need and which clay to use.There is actually the whole page with explanation differences between different brands and I will recommend as an author to use FIMO clay.

I did think twice when I saw the price, thinking Internet, YouTube...free, but this is great value. The author shows clear step by step, arranges it into chapters from arms,feet, face etc, to advising on clay, tools and such. It is easy to you tube, but nothing compares to a great hard copy of instructions at your side. Really pleased.

Although I haven't begun to make figures yet, the layout of this book is clear and informative, and I'm confident that I will be able to follow the instructions to create reasonable character dolls from scratch

I like this guide to making clay figures, particularly how to sculpt the faces. However the figures do seem a bit dated somehow and perhaps a bit twee. However I don't think I will ever be as good as this author, so I am more than happy with it as a great staring point that I am sure I can adapt.
