Interesting read
A good read for all fans of fantasy books, kept me entertained to the last page. Would recommend it to fantasy fans.

good story, well written with depth
A very good story, well written with sufficient depth and attention to detail that makes it all very believable. The characters are likeable and engaging. The quality is maintained throughout all 3 books in the series. Highly recommended.

Original and entertaining
I would say this is up there with the Painted Man in terms of originality. It's like the Original Orcs series was, a breath of fresh air.Putting orcs, dwarves and elves in a Napoleonic context is one step but they're all customised a little too.The author also realises that less is often more so the magic is often a little ambiguous whether it's for good or bad....or like most things in life it's just there and you can use for either. There's also more suggested than described around magic, which gives it a bit of mystery.Against these high fantasy elements you have colourful characters, a bit of realistic banter and problems, and a bit of depth.Recommended.

A decent weekend read
I just finished this book, and I realise it is the first in a series, but the caption sounded right up my alley. I wasn't dissapointed, but I do have to say it isnt as original as one could have hoped. The protagonist is likeable and troubled, but of the sort that lets you grab on to him and be interested enough to see what happens to him next. There is a bit of flat romance with very little to explain the depth of attraction which I found rather annoying and almost setup as a sort of filler, which just had to be there. The peripheral characters are quite good, infact if you are familiar with the Malazan soldier types and the banter surrounding them, you will recognise what this author is trying for, and he does succeed at it in my opinion. The soldiers were among the most interesting and funny parts of the story and kept me going when the rest of it got a little bland.I recommend the book, but I dont think its original enough, nor are the main characters solid enough for more than 3 stars.

Absolutely wonderful
A friend recommended this to me, and I was amazed by how good it was. It was a world that clearly had a story prior to this book (which is not something that has actually been written) and it was shown excellently through the story that was being told. It is a great mix between what could be high fantasy, and the kind of skill of writing from a military perspective, like the books of Bernard Cornwell. I look forward to reading the rest of the series!
