Bought a used CD so it is not a CD-R, and I advise all to do the same.
Only a CD-R for this album is currently offered by Amazon. I avoid CD-R's like it's a plague and do not have a single CD - R in my music library, or a DVD-R in my movie library. The recording is excellent and of course the music is just a matter of taste..let us say it is a must for fans of double bass jazz. Sample the music on-line and if you wish to purchase the CD, purchase used AFTER asking the merchant if it is a CD-R or if it is pressed. BTW: CD's become hot after being played, (and with consecutive playings become very hot), and heat greatly shortens their life span by fading the dyes used in all CD-R's. I have all my music in my computer and the computer’s back-up SSD, and again separately on a third volume, another SSD.I buy CD's from which I transfer their AIFF files while converting them to MP3 files onto my computer and back-up volumes instead of just downloading MP3's. This is because I have a wonderful sound system, (connected to my computer), with multiple carousel CD players that reward me with the sound superiority of AIFF files.

Really, really poor quality files
These mp3s are ~130 kb and sound even worse. It sounds like the first things I heard via streaming media players back in 1995. The bass is so distorted it sounds like two instruments. I expected better quality mp3s from Amazon.

Essential Paul Chambers and excellent sound on CD
Unfortunately there are no sound samples on this page (at the time of this review), but I can assure you that the sound quality on this CD is superior. Perhaps not hard-core audiophile quality, but to my ears it sounds perfect. The album was recorded for Vee-Jay Records over three sessions in early February 1959 in Chicago. The musicians include Paul chambers on bass, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Cannonball Adderly on alto saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano and Jimmy Cobb on drums (except on Awful Mean, which features Philly Joe Jones.)Arrangements and playing are consistently superb. Chambers plays bowed (arco) on some of the tracks, which is a treat. And on the tracks that feature Hubbard, Adderly, or both, they add significant depth and swing to the songs. In fact, Kelly makes sure that each piece swings. I love Jimmy Cobb's drumming and have been a fan ever since he has the drum chair on Kind of Blue. He is subtle with a beautiful touch and lays down a solid groove in conjunction with Chambers and Kelly. Frankly I had a hard time differentiating his playing from Philly Joe's on this album.Obviously this album is essential for bassists. However, any jazz fan should enjoy it. Think of it as a solid piano trio on steroids. Adding Freddie Hubbard and Cannonball Adderly pushes it over the top in energy and drive.

Overpriced
Strong Adderley, not so strong Hubbard on the tracks where he makes it a quintet. From Chamber's 3 CLASSIC ALBUMS which only gives 6 master take tracks.
