are the bone folders real bone?

Not in this cheap of a kit. You can, however, buy real bone folders and they're fairly inexpensive. I have this set, Ecohu Bone Folder & Creaser Tool - 2PCS, and have never had any issues. Make sure to store them in a dry place, though. Mold can start to grow from the pores.
