Most of them grow rice for home consumption, beans for sale, and cotton for weavers. Some also raises and sells animals or seek day labors on neighboring farms. Cotton is grown traditionally without chemical fertilizers or pesticides on the mountainside outside the village. The crop is not officially "organic" as the group is quite small and has not sought what can often be a complicated process if certification. Material for dyeing the cotton, such as bark, roots, and leaves, are harvested in the forest. Members spin the cotton, boil and prepare dyeing materials, and "dip" thread to the desired shade of colour. After drying, thread is ready for weaving. Hand-loomed in the North of Thailand these beautiful shawls are made in the Karen style. The Karen-Hill-Tribes are a group of people who reside in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Paupe carefully weaves each of these shawls herself on a wooden loom. Seeing as how each item is handmade every piece is unique!
