Gardeneer By Dalen Weed-Shield Premium Landscape Fabric 20-Year 3' x 50'

Seems to be up to the task, well sort of.
It will most certainly keep weeds from coming through. It is lighter than what I thought it might be but that made it much easier to cut holes where I needed them which was a good thing because I had already planted when I bought this product. I think grading of you garden is pretty important because water does not go through it quickly so if it is laid on a pitch most of the water is going to run off the cover. It also was easy to lay down because it is pretty thin so it does not tend to roll up on itself like some other products seem to as per their reviews. The thin quality of this cover is also a negative because when I put down my tomato cages made of reinforcing wire the little wire ends tore through the fabric quit easily. I have walked on it without puncturing it. I really did not compact my soil so it is very soft underfoot so I was concerned I would sink down enough to possibly tear the material. That has not happened. It is heavy enough so that a gentle breeze is not going to make laying it down a real chore which is nicer than the other wispy covers that I have used and a welcome property since I do everything on my own.Water does seep through it but I think if I use this again next year I will pay more attention to grading and possibly form some indention around each plant so that water will pool around the plant. It also might be a good idea to use that soaking hose under the cover to insure that the soil stays moist. I have not had any real problems and the first two weeks I have had it down it was very hot and dry and non of my plants showed any signs that they really needed some water so perhaps it also serves to keep water from evaporating into the air except through the plants. My experience with the other covers that are much thinner was that keeping the soil from drying out was an issue. I do not see that with this product but I have not gone under the cover to see how dry or damp the soil is.I think they could claim any number of years because I think that after a few years there would be enough punctures in this material that it would be more trouble than to keep it than to put a new layer down. I would guess that under a shrubbery where you would not walk and it is covered with mulch it would last a good while. But again I think that the grading of the soil would be even more critical because I think that most people do not water their bushes except during really dry periods and if this cover let most of the rain fall run off the soil could get very dry without some assistance from the addition of hose water. Everything is a trade off so while I have pretty much just stuck with newspaper covered with lawn clippings to keep my garden weed free because other covers just stop most of the weeds and then make weeding even more difficult. I do not see any weed making its way through this cover except in those spots where I made openings intentional or accidental.Edit: October 28. The garden season has come to an end so this weekend I began the task of removing the plants that died after the frost put an end to them. I like to plant winter wheat and turn over the soil at the end of the season to bury the vegetables that fell of during the year as well as trimmings I made and just toss under the plants. So the good news is that this product worked incredibly well. Water flowed through it very easily and even with a very dry summer I did not see where this product heated the soil to detriment of the plants like I have seen with some other weed block products. Perhaps it reduces evaporation I am not exactly sure but The plants where I had used this product did not need to be watered any more often than the plants where the soil was either uncovered or covered by newspaper and grass. Not a single weed poked through and there was no sign that any seeds tried to sprout under it. With other products I always got a few weeds that pushed through or sprouted on the surface and sent roots down through it. So as a means to keep your garden weed free it performed exactly as promised. Now for the negative. It did break down some because of the sun because attempting to pick it up so that I could use it again next year was not very successful. It easily ripped where ever it had become stuck to the ground or something was laying on it. So in terms of being a long time cover I think it might fail far sooner than promised but if you are using it in a location where you are going to put it down and perhaps cover it with mulch I think it would work incredibly well. If you are like me and want to use it in a garden where you will pull it up over the winter I think it probably is best to use this as a product that is good for a single year. I do have some sections that held together well but I think that attempting to use it again over a large area is going to take more effort than it would be worth.I do think that if I had prepared my garden by tamping the soil down so you have a more flat surface, held it down with pins and only either did not cut holes or cut very large holes so that you could pull out the plants by the roots without tearing it or just cut the plants at the base so as not to rip it apart near the holes for the plants the results could be better. But I like to leave the soil loose and at the end of the season I had all kinds of stuff laying on the cover. I cleared a lot of it but the cover had become so week in spots that it tore pretty easily even when it was just from its own weight. I still think it is the best weed blocker I have ever used that you can buy but I am pretty sure that next year I will go back to newspaper and grass clippings to hold it down as the method to keep my garden weed free. It works well and at the end I just turn everything over and nature breaks it all down so that the following year my garden soil has even more organic material in it.

awesome stuff
the durability of this weed fabric is awesome.you can’t tear it at all. you need scissors to actually cut it. I highly recommend.

as thin as cheap holiday wrapping paper
It's so thin you can practically read through it. Seriously, how this can be effective for 6 weeks let alone 20 years is beyond me. Junk. I balled it all up and threw it out. I've used plenty of weed barrier products and none have ever approached being as this as this crap. Don't waste your money.

... kills all that is underneath it - all the good microbes and everything
This stuff kills all that is underneath it - all the good microbes and everything. Better off using cardboard and mulch.
