A young woman (Mischa Barton) who is severely depressed after the death of her parents retreats within herself, only to be drawn out of her depression by an unexpected romance with a young man named Adam (Ryan Eggold). After Adam mysteriously disappears into the depths of a haunted apartment building, she vows to pursue him, even if it means crossing into the world of the supernatural.

best part of this movie is the trailer - BIG disappointment!
Beating your head against a wall is a better waste of your time than watching this piece of crap. My husband and I watch quite a bit of the SyFy channel ghost chasing and paranormal stuff (most of which is also a waste of time but even the worst of THAT is way better than this!) and he thought this STUNK BIG TIME as well. The main actress is very beautiful, but her acting is cold and unbelievable and just BAD - for that matter, so is the main actor's so-called acting. On top of which this whole stupid STORY is bad.Girl loses her mother, and her father follows within 6 months. Before dying her father tells her (after being a devout believer in God and heaven etc. his whole life) that it's all a lie - there's NOTHING there (no afterlife). So at his funeral when she speaks at the podium it's more like a session with her shrink than something you'd say when speaking at a funeral service in church - and she tells everyone that her dad said it was all a lie and then she (in church) challenges God or anyone else to f'ing prove otherwise. Later on some guy actually runs into her on the street and supposedly for him it's love at first sight - and later she also falls in love. ---- They give you a bunch of clips of the two of them being in love over a period of time (and I'm telling you, their relationship is COMPLETELY unbelievable -- you just don't "buy" it ... bad acting and bad script. The paranormal comes into play as they join in a "tour" of his apt. building which is supposedly one of the most haunted places you can think of. Centuries ago people more or less came there to die (like a hospice?) and many other people just disappeared. So while it's still an active apartment building - many floors, many tenants - nobody lives on the upper floor because of all the paranormal stuff and there are no longer any stairs. (I guess they closed them off decades or more ago - despite of housing/fire regulations). ..... Weird things start happening to her in her own apt. after the ghost tour of his place... she seems to be awakened by something unknown cutting off her air (they make it look like ghostly pressure of unseen hands on her chest, pinning her down - and instead of her hands going to where she feels pressure or problems, she naturally flails her arms to her sides (so as not to have her hands or arms in the way so you can't see the the pressure by something invisible).... she gets up and sees a chair rocking pretty hard by itself, and then a picture falls off the wall and breaks for no apparent reason. -- She takes the picture, puts it on her nightstand and goes back to sleep in her bed. She wakes up the next day with a small triple surface scratch on her chest (that she didn't notice until she saw it in the mirror no less) and pulls out a tiny piece of glass, and could be explained by her perhaps getting scratched as she carried the broken photo to her bedroom. The scratches are barely there and it's no big thing, but evidently she calls her new boyfriend and they make a big deal out of it, and WHY she had to go to him to have him put a little liquid bandage over it I'll never understand. It didn't even need a little bandaid and she could've done it herself and never mentioned it. (In real life the boyfriend would've thought her a stupid sissy who is "seeing things" and would probably dump her). ---- Somewhere in the movie she finds out her father didn't have cancer, but faked it and had someone help him die because he didn't want to live without her mother who had passed 6 months earlier - but him and the woman who helped him pull off the natural death farce thought it'd be easier for her if they did it that way. ...She is spending the night at his apt. and wakes up to find him gone and blood in the bed on his side and a trail leading to the front door and down the hall and the elevator and on the top floor button. Cops are called and they find NOTHING - not even any blood. So the girlfriend, her roommate, the missing boyfriends roommate and some other girl go up to the top floor themselves with flashlights to find him. It's really - REALLY - stupid, and so is the ending.

....And into light
This is a solidly written ghost story about what happens when faith is lost and all that's left is fear. Photographer Sophia recently lost both her parents, first her mother, then her minister father. The last thing he says to her is that he was wrong, that there is nothing more, and so she is left in a very dark place, faithless, unable to see the beauty in the world, unwillingly to form new relationships for fear of losing them, and challenging anything out there to prove her wrong. Then she meets Adam, who is wonderful and optimistic, and lives in a very haunted apartment building. After taking the ghost tour, strange things start happening to her, and then Adam disappears, leaving nothing but a blood trail to the abandoned top floor, the most haunted spot in the building. She and a few others go up to find him, but the dead and demons roaming the halls don't want to let any of them go. There are plenty of scares in this one, with the subtlety only really good ghost stories have. The only flaws in it are that the relationship between Adam and Sophia seems a little forced at first, and I'm sorry, you can't have a building like that with no stairway. Also, I would have preferred a different ending. This one makes sense, is even poignant; I just think another one would have served the message better. You can decide. I definitely recommend.

Worth Your Time if You're Into this Genre
If you're into this genre, I believe you'll find this well worth your time--especially if you're a Mischa Barton fan! I was afraid I might be a bit disappointed after reading some of the IMDb reviews, so even though I’d looked forward to seeing this movie, I’d tempered my expectations going into it. But I needn’t have worried as I very much enjoyed it! The only criticism I found to be at all true was that perhaps there wasn’t much development of the secondary characters—yet I didn’t feel that took away from the overall story.I thought it was very well paced and more than sufficiently scary. I love a good scary movie, but I’m much more into the psychological kind of scary than the slasher kind of blood and guts movies. So anybody expecting the latter would be disappointed, but if you like a movie that makes you think a little bit and puts you more than a little on edge, this is it (it didn’t help that there are some pretty strong winds outside right now, and at one point while they were on their search in the movie, a broom I keep on my front porch got blown over and clattered against both the door and handrails out there, about 10 feet from where I was watching this movie!).And I don't understand the critics of Mischa Barton. Although I’ll admit I am a fan of hers anyway, hence wanting to watch this movie in the first place, I honestly thought she did a very good job in this movie! I also really liked her in Walled In as well as Homecoming—so I’m finding her to be a surprisingly good actress for this genre of movies. But it doesn’t hurt that there was a love story here as well since I also think she handles that well too, along with the introspective type of roles that more dramatic romances have as opposed to the rom-com type of stuff. I can’t say I knew Ryan Egghold prior to this, but I thought he handled his role fine too, as did the secondary characters despite not having too much to do overall.I won’t give any spoilers here, but despite enjoying watching scary movies alone (as I just did this one), I almost wish I’d watched it with someone so I could debate the ending that I felt was left a bit open to interpretation. Or at least, I know how I believe I interpreted it—but I could see it being explained another way too! So as the one reviewer mentioned discussing it with his fellow movie-watcher for two hours afterward, I could easily see having such a conversation. So all that is to say, unless you’re expecting a blood and guts movie or want a really fast-paced scarefest, I believe many fans of this genre would find this worth the watch! And although I only rented this for now, I plan on buying it so I’ll have it for my permanent collection as I would and will definitely watch it again.

Into The Dark Review
As far a stories go this classic horror isn't bad but I have known a lot better. It has a lot of tension to it but also some pretty sinister moments which may be a plus or minus depending on your tastes.
