Hardware OK - Software and Documentation needs much improvement.
Rating is a 3 because the hardware does what you would expect. The software is not even adequate.I install security system cameras to capture the action around my home. It is important that the system accurately captures the action. It is perhaps more important that I can play back the captured video. That I can quickly and easily isolate the time and portions of the video that I have an interest in. Then to capture it. This is where this DVD is severely lacking. It is hard to review this product because the Amazon review guidelines do not want you to use product names or use URL’s. The problem I have is that this product purports to support operating system devices that run Windows, IOS , and Android. Primarily using peer to peer (P2P) via Free APP XMEYE. Some devices do not work at all. Some have limited abilities and some work quite well. But XMEYE is not very good at any of the basic requirements of configuration, capture and playback. In fact it is a weak link in making this a fairly good product. The weakest link is the use of ActiveX as a browser addin on windows products. The device was shipped without any documentation of any kind and no CD or anything. Not even a shipping list. Questions ask and answered on Amazon about this product point to a website where you can download the JZTEK DVR User Manual in pdf format. This manual is barely adequate. Does not cover anything in detail and is sorely lacking in how to make things work. It is going to require much trial and error in setting up this device for doing anything other than just letting it record and playback 24/7. This user manual needs major work in the area of encode setup, channel type, and alarm setup, just to configure basic function. It desperately needs to reviewed and rewritten to get rid of the Chinesenglish. The only way you can setup this dvr with the best results is to add a display and mouse to the device. For the most part this works pretty well. I attached a 10" display via the HDMI port and a wireless mouse. The first problem with this is the default display resolution is set to 1280x1024. So my display would not work. They should set the default resolution to 1024/768. I believe all current displays will display this resolution. The software does a pretty fair job of scanning and setting up the cameras. Once you have configured the DVR you will find that things just do not work. Like for instance if you set the time and date format to normal USA formats you will find that some things especially in playback do not display correctly. Like the date and time. Word spacing and formatting will be wrong. I need to clarify that it makes a difference as to whether you are accessing the DVR natively using the local mouse and monitor or whether you are using a browser pointed to the DVRs URL (ie. http:// YourDVRIPaddress:80) . I do not understand why.The first things in the User manual is how to setup and use XMEYE. For instance it says"Enter http://xmeye.net into the internet explorer ......". This is important because no windows software will access this device, other than the DVR native software using an attached monitor, except a browser with an ActiveX addin. Internet Explorer (IE) directly supports ActiveX once you have set the IE settings correct (Unsigned ActiveX for instance) this can be made to work. If you are running Windows 10, IE is not even installed on your system by default. You will have to add it. Windows 10 also sets security settings like User Account Control and Windows Smartscreen that will give you headaches in making this work. With older versions of Firefox and Chrome I have made ActiveX to work for these browsers. I have yet to get then to work with this ActiveX addin. The users manual needs to explain how to setup and install the activex addin for IE 11 on a windows 10 systemMy experience with XMEYE is not good. Many things, especially related to configuration of the DVR do not work right. They often do not take. You will try over and over to get the device configured correctly. But you will not achieve it.With ActiveX properly installed you can enter the http:// YourDVRIPaddress:80 to access this device. From here you can change configuration settings and view and play back the cameras. This only works to a degree. For some reason settings configured this way often do not take. One major problem is trying to set the motion detection region. I never could get this defined using browser access. It also does not work using XMEYE.Because this software only runs on PC windows systems using ActiveX, if you have a system with a high resolution 4K screen you will not be able to see anything correctly. ActiveX apps do not follow Microsofts guidelines for High Resoliution displays. It expects the display scaling to be set to 100 percent. As this is not possible on your high resolution display which is often set to a scalling of 300 percent and resolution of like 3840x2160. I have multiple windows systems. The newest has a high resolution display. No matter what I did I could not get things setup so that I could read the screenYou cannot use the new Windows 10 Edge browser or most Smart TVs. They do not support ActiveX.You can use IE to access XMEYE. XMEYE supposedly will run on Android and IOS devices by downloading an app. I have 3 android devices that I tested. XMEYE would not install on my IOS device. It would not install on my Amazon Android Tablet. It installed okay on two of my Android telephones but would crash on one of them. XMEYE did install OK on two phones by scanning the OR code from the phones. This DVR supports AHD, TVI and CVI. You can mix and match camera types to a degree, It will support an IP camera but that will change the configuration of what cameras are supported.Sometimes the playback functions of this DVR just quit working correctly. You try and play back a timed section and the DVR will not accept the action. The only way to fix it that I have found is to reboot he DVR. Sometimes XMEYE can not access the DVR. I have to reboot the DVR.I can not recommend the purchase of this device, however there is not a whole lot of options available for DVR's that support a hybrid set of cameras. This could become a very good DVR with improvements in the software and users manual.

Replaced a useless system for a great price!
I had found a system by Uniden that had four cameras and a 1 TB hard drive. Honestly, the software for that system was so bad that it rendered the entire system unusable. For a year I have been watching this system and finally pulled the trigger.I got it the next day after ordering. Physically, the hardware is identical. I removed the 1 TB drive from the Uniden system (which was a normal Toshiba full sized drive) and installed it into the new DVR just to see what it would do. The mounts look like they are for a laptop sized hard drive, but I got one screw to mount. As long as you can get that. You're good. I fired up the new box. It first formatted the old drive and in a few minutes it went straight to the user set up. After a little poking around, I found that there is not a password set up, so I left that blank (PLEASE set up a new password that is secure once your set up is complete) I went through the set up wizard and within about 10 minutes the system was up and running. The interface is fairly clunky. And I had to input my internet up address manually as it was picking up won't information. But, in comparison to the Uniden box? This is light years better! The app is useable. It's not perfect, but once again, it's better than the Uniden system because I can actually use this one.I may upgrade the hard drive to a 1TB solid state one since they are pretty cheap these days. But overall I'm happy with my purchase.

2 years good
I've had this in my house with 14 cameras (mixed AHD and old D1 cameras) for 2 years now. Only recently did it finally show signs of failure...and I can't really attribute that to any problem with the DVR itself. A low power brownout (I live in Central America...low quality electric power is fairly normal) last month finally did something to damage it to where it reboots every 10 minutes or so. Not JZTEK's fault...it was working perfectly up until then. I thought it might just be the 12V DC power supply that had failed, but I swapped that out for another and that didn't fix it, so it must be the unit itself that was damaged by the power problem. So, I'm going to order another one and swap the hard drive into it. I haven't found anything else that can replace it for the price. I'm not willing to rewire all those cameras with PoE ethernet, so I'll just stick with AHD.I set up the remote access using DynDNS so I can see the cams from anywhere in the world via my phone, iPad, or laptop. No problems. I don't use any other alarm inputs or speakers/microphones, so can't comment on those. No RS485 PTZ, either.Picture quality is far superior to the old analog D1 standard. Not the same as my other system--an IP based system with high quality 3-5MP cameras, but still pretty dang good.

Works as described
Was looking for a DVR that works with the older CCTV cameras, I was also playing around with some other camera types I picked up here on Amazon that wouldn't even register on some of the DVR's I already had. Been learning a bit with this 5-1. every camera I've connected has successfully auto-detected. The software is a bit of a pain to navigate but not really much different than other brands. A little trial and error and making sure you check every menu and you'll eventually find the setting you are looking for. Not thrilled you have to download an emulator program to use the remote app on a computer, but using it off the phone seems to be just fine. Audio seemed to pick up a bit of distortion, and I see no settings to modify for audio capture other than which input to use with which camera. Could be the camera or the line connected with too. So far I have no issues with it. Formats disks quick, plug n play usb backup. All in all, cheap and performs enough functions ensure I replace it with the same brand if it does ever quit.
