The unrevised version was better
The original Brimhall Theory Notebook was slightly smaller in dimension but the pages were laid out perfectly with not much clutter, so you can focus on the concepts. Always loved and used it with many piano students. Unfortunately, this new version has changed the typeset for the worse. The spacing or lack of it between items is confusing. Maybe the company could go back to the original which was far superior.

Best theory book for intermediate students
After researching many theory books, we found this one to be the best for our intermediate violin students. It is even suitable for some of our advanced students who have had little to no exposure to music theory. It's organized, thorough and the pace is just right for someone who is completely new to theory. We also got Alfred's Essentials of Music theory, which seemed quite good, but it moves too quickly through concepts and there aren't as many exercises. That one might be more suitable for older students or adults. For beginners we are using Mel Bay's Beginner Violin Theory for Children. We plan to transition them to this book afterward. We are always on the lookout for good music theory books if anyone else has suggestions.Wish it came spiral bound but I was able to get it done at a locally for about $5.

this book is wonderful. It teaches you in small steps
As someone who is trying to learn music theory, this book is wonderful. It teaches you in small steps, with each successive step building off the earlier steps. It's a workbook, meaning that it gives you some basics on a subject, and gives you stuff to practice with. This helps you learn by small steps at a time, and in the order that you need. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in music theory. I've tried to learn from other books and videos, but they tend to confuse me at some point. Not this book. I learned more about the subject within fifteen minutes than I had in several hours with other books.

Practical concise with answers to verify learning the concepts
I wanted a theory workbook with the answers in the back. Explanations are simply and direct. Practice is required to learn a concept. I play several instruments and have no issues with reading music. Therefore, the beginning of the book is not useful to me. However, the information concerning thirds and sevenths is exactly what I require. Now, I will searc for an advanced theory book.

Written in and useless
This book had been written in so much that it was basically useless for the first 25 pages. I didn't notice at first because it was pencil, but it was very used.

Best theory workbook!
If you are looking for a SERIOUS theory "textbook", this is a good one. It has been around a long time, but still great for beginners through college preparation.

Easy for experienced musicians! And beginners.
I’m a lifelong musician, so working through this book was a BREEZE! But this is a great book for beginners as well.

One of the best.
Excellent. Suitable for absolute beginner on up. Very efficient, i.e., concise (not quite 100 pages total) and yet complete enough to cover just about everything one needs to learn. Definitely recommend it over most other similar books that I've seen.
