KIRIKOU ET LA SORCIERE - DVD (French Edition)

not a fan
first and foremost, this was written and directed by a very white french dude, so it just becomes more and more off-putting as the movie goes on. kinda like what disney did with pocahontas, except maybe not so money-grabbing? but probably worse because of the nudity and trying to come off as an authentic african tale.i will say that it had some nice messages....which become completely overlooked in the end, making it all incredibly pointless and takes away from any lesson a child or even an adult watching might learn.kirikou is able to do many great and difficult tasks no others were able to do because of his small size. his grandfather tells him this when he asks him to make him big and adds that he should be grateful for what he is now, and when hes older, he should be grateful for that too.so what happens in the end? kirikou "saves" the "evil" sorceress, asks her to kiss him (which she does....uhhh what? kirikou is basically a fetus....kinda disturbing) and he turns into a full-grown man because, i dont know, leftover magic or some bull... and they end up together. hate it.a MUCH better ending would have been for him to stay a child (because hey, hes happy as he is) and to introduce the sorceress to his village and for them to accept her and for her to make a living as the go-to healer/advisor or something. im sure she had many stories to tell with all she had been through.i dont know, the ending just cheapens the whole thing, oh guy gets the girl.... of course... how utterly original.theres just too much thats wrong here for this to be enjoyable. so two stars for the beautiful background illustrations, cause they really are very pretty!

Unique Animated Narritive
OMG, this is it! Many years ago I recorded a movie off of TV. I had a habit of always starting my recordings quite early due to things starting at 15 minute intervals and as a result I managed to capture part of a movie that fascinated me: THIS ONE! I never knew its title but I would always reference a movie that I saw that was animated and was African-centrist when talking about why I love animation and how it can portray such varied ways of life in very stylized ways and portray very interesting narratives.I was so very happy to stumble across this in Amazon recommendations as I prowled through some Japanese animation. I highly recommend this to fans of animation for both its difference in style and it's unique personality. In general, this is a tale of a boy who is born with wisdom and sets off to defeat an evil sorceress to save his village. All the men of the village are gone and only the children remain and he, the infant Kirikou, makes it his mission to complete his task and he sets out to find out why the sorceress is evil to save his mother and village and to become a man.The movie is filled with nudity between the bare breasted women and the naked children, but it is presented as it should be: as cultural, up-front, and natural. This does not detract from the narrative, nor story, and I see it as, really, a non-issue, but it may be something that some parents may want to be aware of (since it is rated as a kid's movie) even though I think it's a lovely little movie and was highly unique at the time it was made and STILL is highly unique.

they were so entertained by the wonderful Kirikou.
I watched this movie when I was young and was waiting anxiously until my daughters were old enough to watch it (I thought the sorceress could be scary for them). They were laughing at the clever ways Kirikou solved his problems and marveled at how brave he is. The first scene, when Kirikou is born, really made an impression on them and for days they would go around saying "mother, my name is Kirikou", "mother, wash me!" lolWe didn't have a problem with the nudity on the movie, it is presented in a very matter of fact way and that is how we approached it. My daughters didn't even comment on it, they were so entertained by the wonderful Kirikou.

Amazing! Such a beautiful, wonderful story.
I wish I could give it more stars! Great story. I could not stop watching. The animation was beautiful. The little moral substory about preserving and never giving up even if you are small and alone was great. I loved the part SPOILER where you can see that the woman called the sorceress was just a woman done wrong. Another SPOILER, it was hilarious when the wise man said the men had been transformed into obedient objects but now they've been freed (Doh! LOL I guess to be brutes and jerks who started the problem? We'll never know). But this was a great adventure, filled with love of family and community. I'm sharing the URL link to all my family and friends.

Heartwarming and with a great message
I don't know what I expected, but this charmed the hell out of me. I was just looking for some animation to watch while I was doing some work but I ended up paying more attention than I expected. The art is mostly really delightful; reminds me of a children's book illustrations. Another reason I was initially interested is that I saw that the music is by the famous Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour, and it is very evocative and pleasant. I was initially startled that everyone is just running around naked, as you don't necessarily see a lot of that in the world nowadays, but I got over it quickly. The Hero's Journey is all here and it is a great one; I especially liked the lessons learned by the hero near the end. As others have noted, it's a rare hero who asks WHY the villain is evil or tries to alleviate that issue and thus save the villain as well as the village. This was a beautiful film and if I had kids I think they'd enjoy this exciting and emotionally satisfying story.

Such a Satisfying story!!!
LOVE: 1. the story was captivating with a beginning, surprising climax and an ending2. It tied up most of the questions and mystery that were presented at the beginning3. the voices and dialogue were PERFECT4. the setting is convincing... why else would a spring just suddenly dry up.5. THE ENDING MADE THIS STORY WORTH WATCHING!!!Dislike:1. This is more of a preference... put some clothes on these characters so that I can freely show this story to my kids. :)Loose ends: I'm sure Kirikuo knew exactly what to do with the spoils but what he did was not fully addressed to me.

A great tale
The first time I watched Kirikou and the Sorceress must have been around the time when it was first released, in France. I had fond memories of the story and of the main character Kirikou. Watching it again now after all these years did not disappoint me at all and I am happy I purchased the DVD. It is a joyful, magical tale about wisdom, knowledge, understanding and the tropes of having a manichean perception of the world. The translation used for the subtitles isn't great but it does the job. I highly recommend watching Kirikou and the Sorceress.

The First of the fabulous Kirikou Series
A great introduction to the work of the French animation film director Michel Ocelot from 1998; this was so well received when it first came out that that it was followed by other adventures of Kirikou, and even performed on stage. Set in an African village, it is beautifully illustrated as a joint European venture and is both humorous and exciting, suitable for all ages. Ocelot went on to produce the visually stunning Azur et Asmar in 2007 and I would highly recommend the two films for any collectors of current trends in film animation.

Nice movie for kids
I bought this movie because it was in my to-buy list for years. It's a nice piece, although I would recommend it to see it on French with English subtitles, because I like the melodious French dialogues. For kids, it is nice one way or another. I have heard that there are several complaints because of the nudity shown in the movie, with the town women topless, and the kids completely naked, but nothing in the behaviour of the characters leaves any politically incorrect interpretation. Visually beautiful and also very educative. I am considering getting in time the two extra movies that were published afterwards.

Good gamble
Gambled on this and enjoyed it enough to watch it a second time straight after. A fun story. I bought it as extra research on African art and was well rewarded. Beautiful animation. Jolly songs. Yes that's right. I said jolly.
