Baby Signs: How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk, Third Edition

I bought this book for the first time for my baby girl on the recommendation of our pediatrician. Best advice ever!!! No terrible twos because there is no frustration. And her language skills are off the charts. She is in high school now and still doing phenomenally well. I buy this book for every new momma who expresses an interest in teaching their baby to sign. It’s easy to follow and you will be amazed at how fast you will be having conversations with your little one. Be prepared, though, once your baby learns they will teach their friends and you will have to tell other parents what their baby is saying. I thought it was hilarious!

I used this book with my son 26 years ago and recently bought it for my stepson and his girlfriend. They are excited to try it out once their new son is old enough. From my personal experience, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. Your child will actually make up their own "signs" for things and this will teach you how to watch for those. To start, my son was enthralled with the primary-colored ceiling fan in his room, so we used a sign for "fan" as our first to try. It took a few weeks, but when we walked into a restaurant with multiple fans and he looked at each one and made the sign himself, we knew this was going to be great. He had over 60 signs, which made life so much easier! It greatly reduces the whining and helps your baby tell you what they are seeing and/or wanting. Absolutely one of the best purchases I have EVER made!

The tong is one of the hardest muscles to use in your body. So teach your kids to communicate with other ways. If your kids can tell you what they want, they will be less frustrated and it will actually be easier for them to learn to talk when its time. I loved all the signs, and so did my kids. This book will teach you how and why and has pictures of the signs most used by babies. And your older kids will love learning these to help the new baby. Its great family time. And if you start signing now as soon as the baby is born - then as soon as they are ready they will sign it back to you! The joys of communicating with your child is beyond words. Not to mention crying is usually reduced because they can tell you what they want, you wont have to guess all the time.

I have a book called My First Baby Signs and my baby at 11 month quickly learned the signs. It has colorful pictures of a baby doing each sign and pictures of what the sign is referring to. I was so impressed by how fast my baby picked it up that I was excited to teach her more signs. This book was not the right book for what I was looking for. It's fairly big with very few pictures, and all the pictures are small and in black and white. It's something you would need to learn yourself, and then spend the time to teach your child through repetition. The other book she learned the signs on her own so I thought that was pretty cool. This one's just not as easy to use!

I recently purchased this book and have started reading about the Baby Signs program. I'm very excited to start signing with my infant and think this program is fantastic! My only disappointment is the DVD that you can get "free" with the purchase of the book. Thinking it would be a great informative tool, I went ahead and ordered it (which, by the way, costs $5 for shipping, despite being described as free). I was very disappointed in the DVD, as it was basically sections of news shows that featured the Baby Signs program, but offered no additional instructions or guidance for people wanting to sign with their children. I feel like it is a bit misleading, as I was expecting some demonstrations of signing or at least some further education, instead of what seemed like a commercial for the program. That aside, I am very happy with the book itself and can't wait to start communicating with my daughter using sign language!

Bought the first addition 20 years ago for my 1st grand daughter who graduated valedictorian of her high school class. Recently purchased the new, updated version. Now less than a month later, the newest baby is beginning to sign. It is a great adventure. All parents should be using this easy communication tool. It is truly amazing!

This sign language book really works. A friend had commutation with her 2 month old child. It was incredible. And since the child had complicated health problems that prevented him from talking, sign language was heaven sent because he could speak with his hands. He was speaking in complete sentences when he was only one year old. The only reason young children can't verbalize is because the muscles needed for speech are under developed and not because they don't understand. It sure saved a lot of stress when the child could tell us what he needed and not just crying and playing the guessing game like all the other parents.

This is such a great book--a friend got it for me as a shower gift, and it's literally the best baby gift I've ever gotten. It's a summary of the authors' research into signing with babies/toddlers, as well as a practical guide to getting started. It has been truly life-changing in our family. Example: My non-speaking 18-month-old was able to sign to me that he was afraid of flying on an airplane, once I explained that we were going to be flying to visit relatives. Signing is such a great way to communicate and see into little brains, and this book is an awesome resource!

Um livro interessante e que permite por em prática!

Quando i bimbi sono piccoli riescono a comunicare naturalmente attraverso semplici segni (fanno ciao, battono le mani se sono contenti, ecc.) che noi facciamo con consistenza quando parliamo e interagiramo con loro. Questo libro insegna come espandere prima a 4 o 5 poi a qualche decina i segni che bimbi di 9 mesi e poco più sanno usare per esprimere quello che ancora le loro corde vocali non sono in grado di esprimere...fame, sete, pannolino da cambiare, ne voglio ancora, brucia, e tantissimi altri...in questo modo apprendono molto prima quanto sia potente lo strumento della comunicazione... spiegarvi perché piangono invece di piangere e basta...Per noi famiglia bilingue ancora più importante.Super consigliato, ne abbiamo regalate diverse copie.

If you're considering teaching your baby signs, I absolutely recommend this book. Certainly you can look up individual signs on youtube or what have you without investing in this, but reading it made me feel a lot more confident about how to go about starting, what to expect and what the benefits are to teaching babies to sign. There's even a section on potty training, and a nice illustrated dictionary in the back of common ASL signs as well as simpler baby versions of signs, should you choose that route. My daughter is six months old, and though the book says not to expect much in terms of signing until around nine months, I'm really having fun with it myself. I'll read her a story and do the signs for the words I know, I'll sign the colours we see while we're playing and of course the signs for "milk," "more," and "all done," which come in handy the most. Be forewarned that the FREE DVD advertisement on the cover is misleading. The book does NOT come with a dvd, rather it includes a website that you have to go to to order it, and you have to pay for shipping. I chose this book because I thought the dvd was included and was very disappointed when I saw that it wasn't. But the Baby Signs people were really friendly and helpful and great about sending one to me right away, despite (I'll admit) my email to them being a bit crabby in tone... Anyway, I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to open up the channels of communication with their infant or toddler well before they would normally be able to.

Wir haben mit unserer Tochter von Anfang an spielerisch Baby Signs praktiziert. Sie konnte ihre Wünsche und Beobachtungen ausdrücken, bevor sie richtig sprechen konnte und war daher nicht so frustriert wie viele andere Kleinkinder, die schon klar denken aber nicht sprechen können. Es scheint auch etwas an der Hypothese der Autorin zu sein, dass das Kommunizieren vor der Fähigkeit sprechen zu können die Entwicklung des Sprachzentrums im Gehirn stimuliert: Unsere Tochter war bei den Vorsorgeuntersuchungen in Bezug auf die Sprachentwicklung immer am oberen Rand der Entwicklungstrajektorie.Also eine lohnende Investition für Eltern und Kind!Warum habe ich das Buch gerade erst wieder drei Mal gekauft? Weil wir es jedem Paar in unserem Bekanntenkreis zusammen mit dem Baby-Geschenk als "Eltern-Geschenk" überreichen.

This was a god-send! One of the most frustrating things new mother's find is not knowing what their babies want. With a few simple signs, we alleviated so much of the guess work and baby was content. It was amazing to watch her blossom when she learned that she could have a tiny bit of control over her big world.
