Yes, they quickly understand that it is the device and when it's removed they have permission to get on the furniture. If you have trained them to not get on furniture when you are home you should be good to go.

Will this work to keep dogs off the Christmas tree?

I honestly don't think so. It is extremely effective for my cats, but the noise doesn't seem to phase my dog. She is a coonhound and weighs 45 pounds. if your dog is naturally afraid of noises then it probably will work for you; if not, you will be wasting your money. Hope this helps.

Will it keep cats from going through a door to the outside?

Test it on your cat. I tried the device to keep cat off a pool table. When he activated the full volume alarm he walked over to it and laid down next to it while it was going off. I returned the device
