Swing and a Miss. AGAIN!!!!
I’ve previously owned Lone Peak 4, Timp 1.5, and Superior 4. All of these shoes were great fitting with the wide toe box. I have a wide toe box and high instep but a narrow heel so finding shoes that aren’t too tight or sloppy fitting is hard. The best shoe I ever owned was the Timp 1.5. For some reason Altra has moved away from the generous toe box and has gone back to making shoes like everybody else. I’ve tried the Lone Peak 4.5, Timp 2.0, and Olympus 4.0 hoping to find that same fit to no avail. These shoes all have a narrower toe box that pinch my toes. I took a measuring tape to compare my Timp 1.5 to these Lone Peak 5.0 and there is fully 1/4 inch difference in width! I contacted Altra support and they promised the Lone Peak 5.0 would be going back to the original wide toe box fit. What a let down when I received my beautiful red Lone Peak 5.0s. Not only was the toe box too cramped but the lace up portion down by my toes now pinches too. They make a Wide version now that may remedy the problem but they only make it in the nasty looking Blue/Lime. Really Altra, is this the best you can do? So very disappointed I have to look elsewhere.

For the skeptics!
For the flat footed, this shoe is awesome! I’ve been wearing low and zero drop shoes for a wile now, I’ve tried about 6 different brands already, and have to say these are my favorite shoe. (Excluding boots). Plenty of support even tho it doesn’t have a heel counter, lots of space for toe splay and plenty of grip for trails and a little much for in town walking but still comfortable. Not sure about the heel rubbing blisters yet, walked around in these for a few hours with no hot spots or pinching at all. Very breathable with a thin but still padded tongue. As far a cushion goes it’s very supple without being overly spongy with plenty of support. (I’m 5’10 235 size 12.5 shoe). If your looking for a trail/hiking shoe that is light weight and grippy give these a try!

Unfortunate Size Fail 5
I love Altra shoes because they’re the only company I know of making foot-shaped trail shoes for runners. All other high-end favorite runners’ brands squish my toes or have some torturous arch support. That being said, The Lone Peak 5 is too lengthy. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but the standard width in US 11.5 is just too long compared to my 4 and 4.5 in the same size. Was this extra length intended to keep the big toe from rubbing against the top of the toe box? Did the addition of the wide model throw dimensions off at the factory in Vietnam? I have no idea, but for me my usual size in standard US 11.5 is half a size too long when it comes to the LP5.As soon as I stood with this shoe I could feel the bottom of my foot sliding in it in the living room, not good. Using all available eyelets i snugged the laces up and moved around. The laces loosened as I moved about and exposed my second dislike about these shoes: That massive ankle opening. Please realize my 4 and 4.5 have hundreds of miles each, and they’ve been pretty well put through the ringer. Whereas the LP5 is brand new and just too large of an opening, kinda like what I experienced with the King MT 2 (probably the coolest shoe you’ve ever seen with a Velcro strap). I definitely can’t be slip slide skin melting in these on the trails. The Ego obviously felt more responsive/springier compared to previous models.I could just go down half a size to 11, but then I worry about how tight the mid foot would be, because there is definitely more mid foot support in the LP5 than the 4 or even the 4.5. I think I’m going to be sending these back and once again be cutting into the heels of a brand new pair of 4.5.Altra DID get rid of the Achilles heel destroying upper tab (as all running/hiking companies should) that sullied the 4.5 for some, so there aren’t any comfort complaints or hot spots to speak of. If I got these LP5 again I’d go red. Just sayin.

Most Comfortable Shoe I've Ever Worn
The Lone Peak 5 is the best iteration of the Lone Peak line yet. I originally got on the Lone Peak train because I love hiking, but after feeling how comfortable they were, I started wearing them as work shoes as well, and it was a game changer! This is the only shoe I can be on my feet all day and not have my toes go numb. In fact, my feet still feel great after an 8 hour shift at work. Hiking with them is a breeze. I almost forget I'm wearing shoes. The toe box works exactly as it should, allowing my toes to spread naturally with every step. The Lone Peak 5 has made some improvements over the 4.5 and other previous iterations. The 4.5 introduced an angled shape on the back of the shoe that wasn't part of the 4's original shape. It would rub on the back of my ankle/Achilles tendon like crazy. I'm happy to announce that the 5's reverted back to the comfortable shape, so that's no longer an issue. Additionally the new EGO midsole provides noticeably more cushion and shock absorption during each step over previous versions. The overall construction appears to be a bit more durable as well.If you're new to Lone Peaks, the key things I love about this shoe are 1) the wide toe box, for superb comfort 2) the ultra light weight, which allows you to hike more efficiently and cover more ground, 3) the MaxTrac outsoles that provide incredible traction on trails, and 4) the removable insoles, which you can replace with custom insoles for an even greater experience (I swear by these with Dr. Scholl's work insoles for when I'm at work). As a diabetic, I'm very grateful to Altra for making a show like these. My feet have never felt better, and I sleep well at night knowing these are helping me avoid foot injuries with every step.Lastly, I normally wear a size 8 sneaker. The reviews I read originally said to go a half size up, and I would have to agree, especially if you're wearing thick socks. I've been using 8.5's, and they fit perfectly.

Featherweight
They've only just arrived, so initial thoughts and comments only...Firstly, as others have noted, these shoes are remarkably lightweight. Secondly, despite their appearance, they are not a particularly wide fit: it's just that there is a lot of toe-room. These features, together with the lack of a differential between the heel and the sole height makes them feel more like a pair of slippers than a pair of running shoes, as does the softness of the whole construction.Given that I never was an athlete, and now in my 60s I am even less so, I will be using these for distance walking, not running. In the past, I have disliked trainers for this purpose, as I have found them too soft and squiggie, and have gone for boots instead. However, knowing now that the through-hikers in the USA go for trail-running shoes, and given that an old pair of trail-running shoes I found in my cupboard seem to work well for walking, I thought I would give them a try.In terms of appearance, they're just that little bit different. And they do exude a certain sense of quality... which, for the price, they certainly should!More in a few weeks...

Not good wet off-road
The media could not be loaded. I've done about 50 miles in these now across mainly off road tracks grassland mud and rock.Good: toe box very spacious - great for big waterproof socks. They're light and dry quickly.Bad: there is almost no grip in even light mud. Wet rocks are slippery. In almost all wet conditions these are not very good. I can see that they would be good in an arid rocky landscape, but even then the short stack height means you feel a lot through the shoe. May be a good thing depending on your preference.I wouldn't buy these again.

Great improvement
Originally had loan peak 4 rsm which were almost sent to the bin as I found them almost unwearable to start with, too tight across instep and toes ,also leaked straight away! But I put in a thinner innersole and this cured the fit problem even though they still let in water and getting worse, but they are so comfortable for walking now that I wear them frequently but I wanted something more breathable for hot weather walking hence the loanpeak5, I can say they are a great improvement not tight at all, I don’t run ,only walk everywhere, if you like zero drop these are great shoes but quite expensive and the sole tends to wear quickly, but I love em!!

Bloody comfortable!
Lovely wide toe box, super comfy and zero drop. Just what I was looking for. There's clearly a reason why these come so highly recommend 👍
