The best EVER trimmer I've used
In the past I have bought cheap cordless hedge trimmers and yes they work but the battery life is poor and they wear out too quickly and difficult or impossible to buy replacement batteries. So i decided to spend more for a Dewalt as I have their cordless drill which is great and came with two 2AH batteries. The trimmer was bought without a batteries as the 5AH is not cheap. Having used it for the first time and using one of my 2AH batteries it lasted about 25 mins, more than enough time to do my hedge. Im glad I didn't shell out for the 5AH as this would have added to the weight and I didn't need anything more than my drill 2AH. I hope that helps others who are trying to decided if they need a bigger battery.

Is it worth getting 5ah batteries?
I have the pole trimmer and chainsaw from DeWalt and have been very happy with those so thought I would try the standard trimmer. I also have a lot of DeWalt tools so have plenty of batteries. The trimmer is in the normal yellow box, with nothing other than a brief user guide. I was slightly surprised there wasn't a harness of any type. Also slightly surprised at how large the motor unit is. All in all it is a very impressive piece of kit, it really smacks of quality and considering it's DeWalt value for money. I don't think you will be disappointed.Construction is excellent, with all the switches very positive and the safety very easy to operate. Blade is very sharp as you would expect. It's light and powerful.First thing I did was try a 2ah and a 5ah battery. These are two new batteries that had both been recently charged to 100%. I have to say that I was very surprised by the outcome. The trimmer operates very well with the 2ah but it operates noticeably faster and with greater cutting power if you use a 5ah battery. So, I would say a 2ah is fine for general trimming but if you need something with a little bit more power then you need 5ah batteries.I have two 5ah batteries and a 6a charger and found that by the time one ran out the other was charged, so I could keep going indefinitely without a break.Great build quality. Highly recommended.

Impressive Piece of Kit
Already had a decent electric trimmer but because we have a 50 feet hedge running alongside a cut through walkway which starts after a fence and side of garage appropriate 60 feet long decided to invest in a cordless version.Saw this reasonably new model from DeWalt so decided to order the bare unit since already had batteries with my drill and multi tool.Ordered on a Tues and it arrived on Thurs. With battery attached it isn't overly heavy but it is very well balanced. It has a very good safety mechanism in the trigger switch. My partner used this to trim one side of the hedge and it took her less than 10mins - less time than it would have taken to set up the electric one with all the cables- so No Hassle and with the added safety bonus of no cable to accidentally cut through! She is very impressed with this unit.Used a 3.0aH battery but not able to properly assess battery life, but I have the luxury of more than one battery available so just kept spare charged up ready to go if needed. Also used this to cut through thick branches of a bush we were removing- again impressed with its performance.Overall very impressed with the quality and performance of this piece of kit and glad we invested in this model

Ignore the extended warranty offer.
It arrived today and looks a good tool - we'll see. I'm a bit annoyed at the moment though because the enclosed documentation includes an offer for a three year guarantee but it's impossible to register because the tool doesn't have the date stamp or serial number required. The Dewalt UK website doesn't give any means of contact, they will take a lot of personal information from you though. Trying to sort out the warranty took longer than cutting a large hedge. I think the warranty is 12 months - ignore the extended offer.

Usual high quality DeWalt product
I've been using a cheap "Gardenline" branded trimmer in my garden but having recently spent a fortune on DrWalt 18v tools, I thought it was the perfect excuse to upgrade. I'd been watching the price on CamelCamelCamel for a while and it hit my target so I pounced. The difference in quality between the cheapo version I had and this DeWalt model is night and day. It cuts through pretty much anything I've thrown at it with ease. There is a maximum cutting width but I don't think I've got anywhere near that as it's far greater than I've needed to cut when doing the conifers. With a 5ah battery on board, I was able to get through two lots of conifer bushes (5m x 2m) with ease, and was still showing three bars on the battery indicator. I'm not sure how long it would run for on a 5ah battery but much longer than the average garden would require on a single charge.Very impressed - also registered with DeWalt for the 3 year warranty for free.

the future of hedge cutting!
like all dewalt tools this works great having the batterys already makes this a good purchase, does not drain the battery as much as I expected , this could prove to be expensive if you had to purchase the battery plus the charger , but for anybody in the building trade who has the battery available, and like me buys the bare tools it is worth it plus unlike other cordless hedge trimmers is unlikely to become useless once the battery dies after a few yaers and replacements are no longer available, dewalt 18v xr are so widely used that they should be about for quite some time
