This beautiful basket is hand-woven of palm leaves and comes from the Indus Valley region in South Asia where basket weaving dates back thousands of years. The Indus River region is known as 'A Cradle of Civilization', and is one of the oldest civilizations known to the world. Archaeologists have found fossils of Homo sapiens in the area which date back 50,000 years. An urban society known as the Indus Civilization developed here around 3,000 BC. This basket is woven by wrapping dyed palm leaves over a coiled bundle of special grass grown by the river banks. This is a very fine continuous stitch coil basket, where a stitch to the previous coil is done at every wrap of the palm leaf around the grass coil. Such a basket can take many days if not weeks to weave. Traditionally these baskets were used for serving bread and a variety of other tasks. You will find hundreds of uses for this basket. Use it to organize desk clutter, or as a decorative piece on your wall or table. It also makes an affordable and unique gift for anyone who loves tribal and native handmade pieces of art from around the world. Please note that this is a unique handmade item, and variations in size, design and color are possible.
