Great yarn.
Really enjoyed this book. The characters and story are good. The bond between men is great. Can't explain but only 4stars because there something missing compared toCornwall and Gillman. Will now dread the next book in the series. I think it will get better.

Wallace discovered
I had only known about William Wallace through a Liam Neison film. This book is excellent and one I could not put down. I discovered it by accident through Whyte family connections. I cannot wait to start reading Resistance the Braveheart Chronicles.

Rebel, The Bravehearts Chronicles, by Jack Whyte
I loved this book, as I love all Jack Whyte's books. It is about William Wallace the fabled hero of Scotland that the Braveheart film was based on. It is a purely fictional account of his rise and fall and is written with all the warmth and feeling that Jack Whytes weaves into all his books.Written in the first person by Wallace's supposed cousin Father James Wallace it tells the story of the 2 boys at age 8 or 9 being badly used by English soldiers to the ignominious death of William, taken by the English soldiery trying to revenge the death of his beloved wife Mirren and baby son Willie. A wonderful telling of a story relegated to legend and history. A must read for anyone intersted in this period of history, or even if you just enjoy a real good yarn.

About as accurate as Mel Gibson's Story
I admire Jack Whytes work however I must admit that I had problems with this story almost from the first couple of pages. Don't get me wrong I did become absorbed however the story stretched the imagination to the very limits. The opening sequence where Wallace's family were wiped out supposedly by English soldiers (at a time when there were no English soldiers in the country.) No explanation given for this or as to why they were there. Then we have the part where ten year old William Wallace and his young cousin are sexually abused by the soldiers. Did we really need that ? Certainly no evidence in historic fact to suggest that any such incident occurred. Then the old chestnut of the story of Wallace really being the Robin Hood legend. Wallace the legendary Bowman, unjustly declared outlaw then heading for Selkirk Forrest with his band of outcasts all dressed in green. His bride and fair lady Mirren or Marian leading the community where they rob the rich English and give to the poor. it was so obvious that many of the great philosophical arguements between Wallace, his cousin, Wishart, Murray and Lamberton were to pad the story out to ensure sufficient material for a trilogy. I accept that there is little written or recorded about the life of Wallace and this affords certain leeway to writers however I think that Mel Gibson's oft mocked movie is probably as accurate as Whytes effort. Not sure whether to give the next book a miss or not.

The Rebel
As so little is known of Wallace's early life, this book brought to life a life he could have led before he became the great Scottish patriot that he became know for. It showed Wallace, the man, friend, husband and father It showed a man just wanting the live with the woman he loved and his children, gentle and kind who was catapulted into the man he had to become for Scotland's sake, whilst still retaining something of the man he was. A wonderful book and I shall definately be looking up this writer for more of his novels.

Same as the Guardians
Same as the Guardian series. Unfortunately I was fooled and bought them both. The story is fabulous and worth rereading but I had already purchased it before the house burned down and this makes my third purchase of the series. Disappointed that amazon didnt label them as the same.

Absolutely thrilling
This is what I expect from a Jack Whyte novel. Good research, good threads and the ability to read myself in the ancient times he is describing. At the beginning of course one tends to compare it to the movie, but you soon forget about that and you just go along with Will and Jamie. Can't wait for the next.

Always check for differnt titles of the same book!
This book is a new title for a Canadian book he wrote on William Wallace. So, while I loved the Canadian one, I bought this in error as I had already read it.
