Magical
This is the sort of book I'd have loved as a child. I bought it for my niece for Christmas and she was reading it that very night. The illustrations are lovely and will spark the imagination of a young child for sure!

The 2nd book
IMO, not as prettily embellished on the front cover as BOOK 1 but the content of this 'enchanting sequel' is just as great!Front cover quotes:~ ‘A glorious child-eye’s view of nature . . . a sheer delight’ ~ PIERS TORDAY’~ ‘Full of nature, lore and heart. ~ M G LEONARD’From the back cover:🌰‘...‘Look, we can't just give up on our plan,’ said Moss, firmly.‘If we give up, then we definitely know what’ll happen: our kind will fade from the Wild World, one by one, until there are none of us left. But as long as we keep trying, there’s always, always hope.’...’From the front cover flap:🍂 ‘As autumn arrives, Moss, Sorrel, Burnet and Dormer decide to return home to Ash Row to unravel a riddle that might explain why their kind are fading from the Wild World.🌰 When you’re only one-hand high, it’s a journey filled with both danger and delight: golden leaves, shiny conkers and the brightest of berries, but also storms and the first frost of winter. They have friendship, good sense and humour on their side, but will it be enough to secure a future for the Hidden Folk? Or will they need to go further, and find a way to work with the most unreliable of creatures . . . humans?...’ 🍁Measuring around 19.75 cm x 13 cm, the front cover illustration of this paperback book has a peachy pink coloured enhancement for the titling. Inside are 248 matte finish pages with the story running from page 3 to 232, split over 2 PARTS, namely:~ ROWAN~ YEW...with each subdivided into CHAPTERS as shown in the CONTENTS at the front (image below refers & currently shown on the 'LOOK INSIDE' facility above). The flowing text, lightly humorous at times, is clear throughout, sometimes interrupted by a little black & white illustration.‘A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR’ is on pages 235-237, followed by a page of ‘ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS’.‘WATCHING THE WILD WORLD’ is up next, with short paragraphs from September to February which makes interesting reading, as does ‘MORE TO DISCOVER’ that winds up the book, with a handful of suggested things to ‘READ’, ‘WATCH’ & ‘DO’.The card cover extends into a flap with a map on the reverse that is replicated at the back.Either flap can act as a page keeper if you can bear to put the book down long enough...and that is REALLY hard to do once you are touched by the lives of the ‘HIDDEN FOLK’![17 images attached © Melissa Harrison, Helen Crawford-White, Lauren O’Hara & Chicken House/2021]

Superb
Beautiful book. Read to or read by young people, this book will, I hope, inspire them to find out more about Britain's fantastic flora and fauna. It makes me realise how long it has been since I heard a cuckoo or heard skylarks singing. Now, instead of a dawn chorus with many species I now have only a solitary blackbird to wake me on a spring morning. I have a reasonably sized garden, and to say I'm re-wilding would by exaggerating, I'm doing my best to keep it as natural as possible - no decking, a minimal paved area and absolutely no artificial grass. If this lovely book, and its forerunner (By Ash, Oak and Thorn) makes people think about what they're missing by being deprived of access to our wonderful wildlife.
